My truck is only a year old. I just got a winch for it. I also have a jeep. It had an optima red top that finally gave up after 8 years of hard use. I just bought a new red top to replace it.

Is the stock Tacoma battery up to the task of wincing? If it is then I will put the red top in the jeep. If not, then I'll switch the batteries as I have been using the truck more than the jeep lately.

    Thanks

I tried to find an emojii with a wincing face but couldnt, oh well. Your question really depends on the type of winch you will be winching with and the amps it draws. what model and type of winch is it?

Edit: Oh here it is, also called a pooping emojii:

I have a smittybilt X20 in the way, curious as well, but I don’t think there’ll be a problem unless you are winching All the time.

    Nice winch! The specs say
    • Recommended Battery: 650CCA Minimum for Winching
Just get a standard deep cycle with at least 650 cold cranking amps (cca)- and save some money for the charging and mounting hardware.

I guess if the stock battery goes dead it could give you a wincing face,..

If you look in the manual for the X20 (I have a 12k), it shows you the draw at various loads, and you don't actually start to need the full 650 until you are pulling about 75% of the load limit.

That said, I'd still not cheap out on a battery and risk not having the juice to get out of a bad spot

Thats when you Macgyever the two batteries in series and power through it while wincing due to your smoking winch because you realize the batteries should have been in parallel :anonymous:

It was in fun... @Jibbs is right- have to go by the specs and then some. If you are really stuck and the winching battery is getting low, I’ve put my main in parallel with it for a quick kick on a winch before (but stupidly did smoke the winch leads for a second because I put it in series first).

I'm going to be running a marine grade AGM group 27 as my aux but thinking winch on main.
but since I have the Off grid engineering dual batt system i could always link the two so they would be in parallel. I figure that would be the best way to not require an upgraded battery.

If tying them together long term in parallel- both batteries should match in age and type- then you’ll be good to go!

Edit: but its ok for short term if you need the extra amps for one-time winching - just keep in mind that the lower battery is also drawing from the other too.

Don't have the money to buy two new batteries and I've heard plenty run it without issues.

I will be getting the 10k synthetic rope. The OEM batter has 584 CCA, and when I run winches, I normally have the vehicle running, so I would have guessed it will be alright since an alternator puts out about 120-150 amps. Wouldn't running it longer than what the OEM battery is capable of just overheat the winch?

I'll probably test it out a couple of times when I get it on trails. If it drains my battery, then I will buy deep cycle ones. I have those very expensive but nice battery booster/starter (NOCO brand), that can jump start my truck without a battery so I am not too worried about draining it.

So OP, the battery in mine is rated for 584 CCA. Hopefully, me highjacking your thread a bit got you the answers you need =p.

Did your charging setup come with a switching relay? Then you can certainly use two different batteries for charging.
