Just a quick question for those with 4WD...When you guys are in 4-Lo and and are in 1st gear, are the stock brakes able to hold your truck from moving? Primarily interested in hearing from those with a manual transmission.

It would be a pretty poor design if they didn't...

Do the answer is yes(assuming) everything is in proper working order.

    Why it makes no sense??

If my foot is on the brake the right is on the clutch

If your line lock using just your front brakes can hold 600 + horsepower to do a burn out I am sure 4 brakes can but it will just stall.

Well it sounds like i need to take a look at my brakes. 4Lo overpowers my brakes and the engine wont stall with the brakes fully depressed and foot off the clutch.

How soft is your brake pedal? Should be firm. Might have air in your brake lines somewhere. If you aren't a mechanic bring it to one

Brakes seem fine normally.. They arent super soft, nor super hard. I do almost all my own work on my cars. Timing belts on a Camry and Civic, and I've replaced the clutch on my Tacoma. Though it has been awhile since I've replaced the brakes, but like I said, the brakes seem fine while driving under normal conditions. I've towed a travel trailer (approx 3000#) with no issues. Its just whenever I have 4lo engaged with the truck in gear, it doesnt stall....I have new shoes and pads I got awhile ago for the truck that I'll put on once I find me some brembo blanks. When I get to it, I'll report back here and let you all know if 4lo still overpowers the brakes.

Still interested in hearing from 1st gen owners if their manual trans. truck stalls in 4lo when brakes are applied.

I have manual trans and 4wd and can safely say that if the wheels are turning I'm not stalling.. and that is pretty much across the board, not just in 4lo but I'd say that in 4lo I can eek it that much closer to stopped without stalling. My tires are oversized and my brakes are borderline dangerous when it comes to driving in traffic at speeds over 45mph especially in wet conditions. In 4lo, however, the truck is moving WAAAY too slowly to do anything but eventually stop with the brakes applied no matter what gear or speed I'm Low-gearin' it in! Hope this answer is of some use to you;)

So you can't stop your truck in 4lo while its in gear?

Perhaps I made that a bit confusing.

In 4Lo I only stall if the wheels stop turning.

Braking in 4Lo is the easiest braking I ever experience and braking hard WILL absolutely bring me to a complete stop. Without pushing in the clutch, this has, and will, result in stalling.

Gotcha... Ok. This makes sense.. something must not be right. I imagine the rear shoes arent grabbing aswell as they should, but youd think just the front pads alone would be able to stop it at a crawl. Eitherway, it will all be replaced. Thanks @WheelInTheSky

Not being smart here but is your clutch slipping?

    Is your idle really high?

Now I really would not like to try but I think if the rpm was high enough you could over come the brake pressure but my luck something expensive would break.

First Gear low range I step on just the brake pedal the truck stops and stalls.

Thanks for the feedback @Wyoming09 I replaced the clutch less then 10K miles ago so its not that. Im all to familiar with the symptoms of a slipping clutch. No high idle in my case. It actually drops as it should below the 700rpm mark when in gear with 4 low and brakes fully applied... Just weak brakes I guess. Its odd because I dont notice anything while Im driving normally, even when towing. But thats why I like to keep parts on hand so I can easily replace them....when I get to it.. lol. (My Tacoma is not my daily driver)

yes the brakes should be able to stop your truck in any gear, low or high. unless you're stomping on the gas in gear at the same time as applying the brakes then it depends...

if you're in 4 lo and 1st gear, no foot on the gas and you hit the brakes you should stop and shouldn't be able to move anywhere and your engine should stall. if your engine doesn't stall and your tires aren't spinning even though you're still in gear i would think the the clutch is slipping or something like that

if your engine doesn't stall and your tires are still spinning even though you've got the brakes applied then somethings upwith your brakes

    ^^^lol^^^

Yeah the only thing I can think of and I know you said u replaced it, the clutch... Since you can stop just fine any other time I find it hard to believe its a brake issue. Maybe clutch pedal outta adjustment allowing a little slip in 4 low conditions....??
