stock e locker on an older taco?

    Hey so i was wondering if it was possible to fit an e locker from a 98-04 TRD taco onto my 96.
    It seems like it should work, but maybe not...

    any theories/experiences/advice for this? i figure it would be cheaper than an air locker.

    the axle will swap in easily, but you cant put the locker in your current axle if thats what you meant

    yea thats what i thought. someone i talked to thought you could just swap the assembly, but i thought you had to do the whole axle.

    the driveshaft will still fit into the either axle though?

    Oh yes you can, you just need to modify your housing to accept the e locker.

    edt: as long as you have a 8 in housing.

    No, this won't work for the OP's situation ...

    The link above is for retrofitting a factory e-locker (based on the 'V6 / Turbo' differential unit) into a 4Runner (which used either the 'V6 / Turbo' or, in some rare cases, the so-called '7.5' unit). Internal parts can be interchangeable between these two units.

    NO 1995.5 - 2004 Tacoma came with the 'V6 / Turbo' differential (except for those equipped with the e-locker based on it). Assuming it's a 4X4, the OP's 1996 Taco has the '8.4' differential. You cannot swap internals from a 'V6 / Turbo' into an '8.4' without massive reworking of the '8.4' carrier (housing). This is a much tougher 'surgery' than described in the 4Runner writeup cited above, and it has been demonstrated to cost a lot more than it's worth.

    right this only works for a 8 in housing if you have 8.4 you are SOL and would need to go ARB.

    crap. thats what i feared. how can i check?
    i mean, its just a 96 4wd base model if anyone knows for sure, although enola gaia seem says its an 8.4.
    oh well. thanks guys.
