So, did anyone ever try this? I'd like to see just ONE working example and I'd happily order it.

I never did, I had a few hang ups with it and now with the new HU with Apple it’s a waiting game to see what price those will be

What are the chances of Toyota upgrading the current head unit to Apple car play? They were holding out on it. Not sure if it is capable of running CarPlay with a upgrade.

0% chance. Apple CP (and Android Auto I think as well) requires special hardware/chips that aren't in the current HU. Supposedly you'll be able to put the new 2020 HU in older models if you buy an extra harness along with it, but that is the only option to do it as of now and keep it OEM.

The 2020 Taco will have Carplay/Android auto with the entune 3.0. From the pic below, it looks like it will be a direct swap as far as the physical size/shape go. Screen is just larger with a smaller bezel around it.

The problem is, it looks like the current entune 2.0's retail for around $900+. Can't imagine what the entune 3.0 would cost if the swap ends up being possible with the '16 - '19s.

I say go aftermarket vs. the NV Connect... I highly doubt it will work as well as you want it to and I guarantee it is frustratingly slow to navigate.

Also something to keep in mind, seems all models (except manual trans) get JBL stock. We dont yet know what the new JBL package will be, but if its like the 2016-19 models then it may cause some issues.

I've been wondering about how slow it will be. They posted a video recently on an Entune JBL system and it didn't look too bad. Current gen touch screen still sucks but this might be a better option than spending 3k on a new HU

I think it’s the only option as of now unless you try to buy a 2020 HU?

Anyone try the nv connect module yet? Are there any others that are out on the market now?

Sort of on this topic- do you guys know if it’s possible to drop a JBL Entune HU in a non JBL truck? I want to do the CarPlay module, but in being told it needs to be on a JBL unit. Just want to make sure before I drop on a HU.
