does anyone happen to know the max undistorted volume of the stock tacoma headunit? I have the non premium touch screen headunit (2013) if it matters at all.

I dont have access to an oscilloscope to measure myself, and the ones on craigslist near me are a quite expensive or rather old and missing parts.

Also, just for my own knowledge, what type of test tone should be used if i come across access to an O-scope? 60hz?

Most distortion specs I've seen are given at 1kHz. If you have access to multiple test tones, then try taking measurements at different frequencies and settle on the volume that is the most limiting. Ears are most sensitive to distortion at higher frequencies, so you could get away with some distortion at the lower frequencies.

Get a scope that can perform Fast Fourier Transforms and you will really be able to measure the magnitude of harmonic signals.

generally speaking, our hearing is most sensitive between 2-5kHz

the amplifier usually does not care what frequency it's amplifying, it's the impedance rise in the speaker(s) attached that will cause the amplifier to work harder.

that said, i will likely do 1kHz, 40Hz and 10kHz if possible. it's a PC based Oscope, i don't think there will be any trouble loading FFT's.

are the PC (or MAC) bases Oscopes accurate? i looked a few up online and they are fairly affordable. much more so than a handheld unit or bench top

For the 2016 it started to clip at 59. Don't know how that translates to the older versions. You should be able to find a shop that can do this for you. Takes about 15 minutes.
