I hear ya - I have aftermarket wheels so I have to keep a long breaker bar and a thinner walled socket to remove my wheels and when I went to break those loose I couldn't believe how tight those lugnuts were. Definitely tighter than recommended.

Seriously? Wouldn't it leak under pressure then? Shouldn't it be sealed?

Was just talking about this yesterday in another forum. Can’t remember the guys name or the jack he had but was in a nice carry bag. Let me see if I can find it.

I believe the jack points for emergency tire repair with the screw jack per the owner's manual are the LCA up front or the axle in the rear.

I keep a 6" chunk of 4x4 in the bed cubby next to the outlet.

My only experience with hydraulic bottle jacks are the couple that I've "inherited" from people... usually they look like they were manufactured in the 50s and yes - they leaked when knocked over (also didn't hold steady). But I think a new one would be sealed pretty good and shouldn't leak on its side. But I do deal with pretty extreme temps here in AZ so I could see some seepage but probably not that bad. Not really sure though.

Thinking about it more, the only vehicles that I had with bottle Jacks from the factory, had them upright

The factory jack got replaced pretty quickly in my truck. For a long time I used a Ford F250/350 truck bottle jack. Junk yards are full of them for cheap. They are good heavy duty items, and fit most anywhere. These days I carry a military Hummer H1 scissor jack. The Hummer jack can get under things a bottle can't, is rated at 7,000lbs, and it lifts to 20". It has a large stable base. No hydraulics to leak or fail. It is bigger and requires a place to stow it, and you will need to fab up a foot to fit the stub on top. New you can get them around $175. You can find them used for under $100. Pound for pound it's the best jack I've used.

Several members have recommended using the LCA as the lifting point. I'm assuming we are talking about the LCA its self, if so that's the last place I would use as a contact point for a jack, a jack will slip off an LCA in a heartbeat due to the angle. The actual lifting point on a Tacoma is behind the front tire and forward of the cross member, if I remember correctly.

My bottle jack is stored under the jumper seat, lying on its side, exactly as it was from the factory. I sure hope it doesn't leak... so far, so good.

    none yet
If you place the jack on pieces of wood, could there be a warranty or insurance issue, if the thing fails, resulting in damage to the truck?

I used my bottle jack on the LCA to lift the truck (33's) when I blew a balljoint a couple months back and it worked fine. I positioned it close to the weld near the lower BJ. Maybe that's why the handle is so long, so when that thing shoots out you can dodge it

After getting new tires I rearranged the stuff in my storage areas and made room for my boards. I want to thank all of you for your advice and opinions.
