    stock for now
im looking to buy a tacoma in the future, im currently overseas so can tget one just yet. Im stuck in between a sport or offroad model. i love the looks of the sport however i want that locker. my question is, does the stock locker make that big of a difference, is it better to get the sport and throw in an aftermarket locker? thanks for reading.

It makes quite a bit of difference. Most people go wheeling with the rear lockers. Then when they get really stuck. They turn on 4x4.

Just remember that the stock locker only works up to 4 mph. You can mod it, but that's how it comes.

If I had the money, I would have gotten the Sport and put an ARB in it.

 You can hit 100 mph with the locker engaged.

you can only engaged it at <5 mph.... soon as its engaged you can go as fast as your hearts content.

also keep in mind OP. with the TRD OR you also get ATRAC which is almost a simulated locker in the front.... pair that with an actual locker in the rear... its impressive. I love the stock locker in my truck, wouldnt buy a taco without one.

This was the big factor in my decision to purchase a Sport.
If I want to add a locker later on, I can get exactly what I want and potentially find a good deal.

    When nodded maybe.

Mine only comes on when in 4 low.
    And under 4mph to engage.

How does that work with the TC?
Seems it would work really well with the computer applying some brake for you to engage the diff.

Get the off road and just buy a color matched bumper and grill surround, you now have the perfect 4x4 Tacoma. I spend about $100 after selling my chrome grill surround and rear bumper on CL.

You want A-Trac, it is amazing out in the wild, the rear locker is just another bonus to the off road.

Even though I have a 4x4 with the LSD I would rather have atrac and a locker

I'm on O/R #2, wish I would have stuck with SR5 since I already got a front air locker, I want a rear one now. I already have the axle waiting for the 3rd, now I play the waiting game for something to give out on my rear axle so I can swap in a new 3rd member.

You can make an off road look like a sport for less money than adding a locker to a sport...

I don't really care for looks, I care more about function but I get what you're saying.

Cheaper if you install yourself. I don't think if you watched a youtube vid of it done makes you qualified but it doesn't seem hard. Boil ring gear, freeze locker, install and boom. There is more to that but that's the jist of it if I remember correctly.
