Yep you're right.. I was reading on it years ago and seemed easy. Just watched a dude put one in on an FJ40 and looks like a PITA.

ATrac impressed me the first time I used it in a situation where I needed to climb. Coming from a 2000 ext cab TRD with diff lock to a double cab 2012 TRD with diff lock and ATrac... Hell of a difference. Deff worth it

I can't let the wife know
What does the off road package diff comes with? Is the sport diff made of better material?

I am surprised more people don't use the Trutrac differentials. I have one in my car and it is fantastic, I like it better than my old clutch posi units. I've never used a full locker though.

    THIS ^^^

I had a 2001 TRD and a 2005 Off Road TRD, and when I tried the 2010 with A-TRAC it was a whole new ball game in what this truck can handle and crawl up or out of. Never stuck again with the 2010! TRAC and A-TRAC seriously enhance the trucks off road abilities and security.

    No, you can not.

I paid $700 for my ECGS RD-129 set up with ARB compressor. It had about 30k on it. Took us 30min to swap out thirds from the sellers truck to mine.

If you've never been stuck you've never pushed the truck near it's abilities let alone past them.

Like skiing. I have friends that say "I didn't fall all day". All that means is they did not push themselves past their abilities thus will never evolve or progress.

After years of reading your posts on A-Trac I now fully understand why you love it. You never pushed the truck past it's limits and have no idea what your missing. When you do get into a situation and get stuck you'll be clueless as to how to get out of it or avoid it in the first place.

Ive gotten stuck upwards of ten times in a day and learned from each incidence.

He's saying in its stock mode, like a 1st gen 4x, only works in 4Lo in stock form..

I don't think I'd try to engage while still rolling

In stock form, 1st gen gray wire MOD is stupid easy to do, not so easy with 2nd gens tho'...much more involved ...

Exactly... screw crappy sealed e-locker solenoids that work when they want to.

I can run my ARB locker with my air tank if my compressor ever shits itself....if I ever get around to wiring it up in the first place :D

I remember a member here building a truck specifically for South America and one of the first things he did was yank the e-locker out and replace it with a Auburn LSD.

Either way you go OP any/every true locker sucks in on road snow/slick conditions around turns and it takes getting used to.

Monkeyproof has a great thread on removing the third. He has the e-locker but the LSD is even easier to get out. I used that thread for reference and his tips/tricks saved me from having to even disconnect the brake lines. Basically just loosen and pull both axles away from the third. Loosen third and remove it. Install new third. Push axles back. Tighten bolts down. The longest part is wiring up and mounting the compressor IMHO.

Can do it with one person, but I'd recommend two.

The rear was pretty easy, the most annoying part is getting the e-locker in the right spot to put the 3rd back in, and +1 for monkeyproof's guide for removing it, helped a TON

Yep, pulling the 3rd is easy, just heavy & a bit awkward until you get it past the studs (pins are more like it, skinny as hell)

Shit, re calibrating the Elock actuator is simple also, I just manually slid it into locked mode to match the actuators position , energized it & let the solenoid do the work for re calibrating, piece of cake...;)

My dad had a TRD Sport prerunner before I got my Tacoma. I liked the way his looked more (Hood & color matched stuff) minus the sport wheels and tires for me. I also wanted an Access Cab his was a Double Cab.
His had a LSD which helps, but I wanted to have a locker.
I'm building my Tacoma into a Long Travel prerunner and for now the stock locker works for what I need it to do.
I guess it depends on what you like more and what you will be doing with it.

Clueless? Seriously you need to drop to that level to feel good?

I have been four wheeling for over 40 years and stuck in some pretty bad places including a river crossing and high tide rising beach.

So, you don't know half of it, even though I post plenty here...

What I mean is the rear locker alone did not get me unstuck without other action (I been stuck many times). Since getting the A-TRAC, in the same places I got stuck before, the A-TRAC pulls me through. It's that good having traction on the front as well as the back!

I can't always stop to take photos in the most technical four wheeling. I more often go solo (specially with the security of A-TRAC), so nobody to take pictures of me...

There are a couple of You Tube links in my signature of my truck climbing in A-TRAC and pulling a 2WD Taco up the Diablo Dropoff in front of TWers and Jeepers (who said no way could it be done).

Some picks from the Widowmaker, Mission Santa Maria road, Baja California (I have done in all three of my Tacomas, but the 2010 with A-TRAC was by far the easiest and the grade was the worst of the many times I drove/ rode it...
