Mass has a lot to do with how sharp you can turn and still maintain traction... In my stupid 20-something years, I used to race friend’s 4wd’s back to town after working the ski area at night with my little BMW 1600, I could easily pass them on the outsides of turns which was really stupid.

That’s right to a point. A/T tires with a non stock vehicle with more weight can help. Bad tires won’t! Like they said on the crunchy stuff or sand. On 2” solid ice? Not happening! If you have winter tires or chains sure.

I watched car after car collide in February last year.
I bought my new tires in Appleton that day and drove in the blizzard to have them installed. I watched all the idiots blow by me at 70 to see them in the ditch as I rolled by at 40mph! 40-50 single car accidents. Most 4wd.
If it’s solid ice on street tires you just won’t stop

Step kid can tell you all wheel drive Subaru won’t stick on black ice. Towed out of a cornfield on 6 mile road and Hwy 32

I've seen R3 once in 15 years. Cal Trans will shut the road down before they go to R3. I carry chains in my rig but have never put them on. They are just there so I can show CHP at chain control stops.

Tahoe is a different story, I used to live in Bear Valley on the western more snowy side of the Sierra, where we had front doors up on the second story of the house to use only during the winter time. There’s only one road in and out of the town so they will go to that extreme often when it snows.

Drove them near Killington, Vermont last winter. They did fine on snow/iced roads. I also did some light snow wheeling and they did fine with that too. No complaints

I've done two winters in CO with the stock Goodyear Kevlar's with no issues. They aren't as good as a dedicated snow tire, but they will definitely get the job done. I've been through many roads covered in a foot or more of soft snow and the truck didn't even flinch. Just slow down and practice safe winter driving practices and you'll be alright.

I just swapped out the stock Destination LE2's for a set of General Grabber Arctics on my truck for less than $500. I'm running 245/75/16's, larger tires may run you a little more. I also went with the standard ply vs the lt version. I'll change'em back to the Firestones in April.

Sort of. That’s what the 4Hi is for:). Neither helps in a skid or stop.

I drove in a snow storm in Yosemite earlier this year. Stock tires (GY Kevlar) on a TRD OR 4wd. Honestly, they are meh... they did OK, but I did slide a couple of times when the snow had just started - that's when I installed the chains and didn't have a problem at all. I also used the truck (without chains) in Big Bear and they sucked, I slid a couple of times (I wasn't driving agressively at all - no hitting the brakes or stepping on the gas heavily).

I also got stuck after the truck had been parked overnight and the snow beneath the tires turned into a pile of ice, couldn't get out with 4wd or locker. Installed the chains again and got out in seconds.

    Have fun in Yosemite.
