Radio just stopped working one morning. Checked battery and both radio fuses and everything seems to be alright. Any ideas on what else could be malfunctioning?

Our radios are not designed to last very long. Mine is currently changing stations randomly.
Try craigslist or a salvage yard or upgrade to something better.

Upgrade to a double din stereo. Sadly, toyota only care for shipping tacomas with the worst HU and shitty speakers to earn more money, and never to give an excellent product for consumers.
Had it upgraded recently HU and front speakers and its night and day. More functions and totally durable (kenwood deck), with handsfree phone and such.

You may have lost a good ground to the radio. AM radio insists on a good ground.

I upgraded my radio a few years back. The factory head unit is on a shelf in my garage. I'll give it to you for the shipping cost if you want it. I hate throwing stuff out otherwise it would already be gone.

It's the antenna that requires a good ground for AM reception. The actual base of the antenna on the fender must have a good ground connection to the fender.
