I’m new to the Tacoma scene, and just bought a 20 TRD Off-Road. Am trying to determine if OEM TRD suspension is adequate for the average off road exploration. I had a 2” lift on my 14 Rubicon with 34” tires and never had any issues. That being said, I know they are two different vehicles, and I do like the stock OEM ride of the TRD Off -Road, but am wondering what seems to be the avg lift for a adventure camping type activity. I have a RTT on back of bed.

Anxious to hear what people have on their 3rd gens.

    Cheers

My 2007 Xterra has a lower clearance and climbs crazy stuff. Yeah, but also depends on trail. Just don't be dumb, away from home is not a good place to be stuck broken.

Try it on the places you go and see. It's the only way to know.

Most folks find a tire upgrade useful at some point. You can move to full 33s if you are ok with the 'skinny' look of a 255. Keep it on OE wheels and you won't need any lift, cutting or bending to avoid rubbing. And you'll gain real ground clearance (at the axle line) from the taller tires. Something suspension lift doesn't do.

Depending on your terrain, skinnys can actually work better than fat in many cases.

Exactly, and it's fairly cheap. Tires and brakes are the main things I don't skimp on.

They sit super high as it is, I only scraped my frame a few times doing regular trails. Just get a good set of tires and you're gold.

you tube has a 2020 stock offroad video, I don't have the link but it definitely is impressive. Of course this guy is sponsored but he really pushed it to the max. At the end he decided to upgrade skid plate and new rear bumper. I also drove a 2020 offroad. It really is a nice ride.

Yep, but according to TW you need 33's and a lift just to get through the mall / home depot parking lot...

That's only for the kids whose backs still let them toss mulch bags that high. :D

True. The only way to know is to try terrain you'd usually be going on. I've found the stock height on my TRDOR is sufficient for most trails near me. You just have to pick good lines and get out and look sometimes.

Personally, I’d put that money into some armour like rock sliders and better skid plates.
My 2020 OR has gone everywhere my lifted 18 sport went with no clearance issues. I don’t do extreme rock climbing but I hit rough trails and mud ruts pretty much every weekend.

Hi, stock ride height is unacceptable for IG off road exploration.

I purchased the TRD skid plate figuring I most likely am not going to lift the truck with exception of bigger tires is all.

Depends on what you're doing. Anything other than fire roads get sliders.

I've ran my stock height and added sliders and skids according. I think you'd be surprised what 9.4" of ground clearance and proper tire placement can accomplish

lol at 5’ 5” I have to hop into my 4x4 trd offroad XD I figure it’s high enough for me.

I did run the back tire off into the culvert one day, no damage, truck just kept going like a champ...love those predator siderails!

I love my skidplates, oem are quality and tough. being offroad I have the tranny plate too

I recall Kevin Hart talking about nearly falling out of his lifted truck when one day I slipped on the siderail and ended up sitting on the door jam XD

Stock OR height seems just right for what I do with it. The worst things I encounter are bad, unmaintained mountain roads and trails throughout the Northwestern US. Occasional game retrieval offroad. I’m on my 2nd OR and am glad I haven’t yielded to the lift temptation.

I’ve done most of my exploring in stock form with stock tires (TRDOR). The articulation on these trucks is surprisingly good for the average off-roader. My biggest concern were the tires after a while, so I switched them out to some KO2s and haven’t worried much since then. Granted, my off-road use has been around the Big Bear area in California, so nothing too challenging.

What kind of wheelbase are you? I’ve got the trail limo, but have done some trails in a Willys, and you could really just point and shoot, and it would go there. The taco in certain circumstances just needs a few extra moments of thought of wheel placement (when compared to the Jeep). I imagine a modest 1-2 inch lift would help alleviate those concerns, but I plan on staying at the stock height for the foreseeable future.

If you came from a lifted jeep, then no, you won't think it's enough. Mine was OK, but then I went 2in lift and 33s and now I like parking next to a factory Tacoma.

I have a 2016 TRDOR, stock height (w/255s) and have done a few serious trails. It is a bit pricy but I will be replacing the stock rear bumper with a high clearance steel bumper. I drag the trailer hitch quite a bit, which can be weird at times.
