I have a 2017 QS DCSB. Sport model. Ithe only thing I have changed is tires. I have 265/70/17 E tires. I have lived in Wyoming for 5 months and have put in A LOT of time off road. Fire roads, desert etc. No real mud or snow. Guess what - not once was there somewhere I couldn't go or had any concern I wasn't getting out. The point of this is to tell people who bought the sport that this is still a very capable truck. Sure, if I could do again I would have gotten a PRO but that's for the resale value when I want to trade it in for the Ranger Raptor. I remember when I first jointed Tacoma world and thought I needed this skid plate and that suspension etc. You don't need it to go do 95% of things. I have no desire to crawl over big rocks or go through giant mud puddles. I just want to go see stuff. So for those of you who think your sport isn't good enough...it is. Get some good tires and go enjoy.

PS I haven't even taken off the air dam and very rarely even dinged it.

I have a TRD OR and I haven’t had to use the rear locker yet. I’m happy to know it’s there if I need it, but I wouldn’t say it’s a necessity for most people on here. If you like the look of the sport then I say get it. I personally like the look of the the off road better and the extra capability if I wanted to do more off roading in the future, but most of my off roading is on two wheels in right single track on my dirt bike

Yeah I have the 2010 Sport, works great.
Off road adds the locker and terrain select.
    Pro add better shocks.

But all these trucks need is a good set of tires and hit the trail. After some off-roading add a lift and some good lights and you won't need much more.

Some of my best mods were free, door chime, seat belt chime disable and any time fogs....

Nice, most all 4WD vehicles will go the same places for average off road trails.

On another note, your genitalia tends to shrink when some rally guy passes you on the trail or in a minivan. People that take minivans off road will try to go anywhere.

Do you need to know, or care?
I do the forestry roads up here in BC in a Limited to go into fishing spots. Never had a problem with it and have hit some rough terrain. Not planning on doing Rubican, but if I wanted too, replacing tires and a good spotter would I'm sure get me through. Vehicle is more than capable of most off-roading adventures.

Yup, sport is s very capable truck off road, and handles great on the road. Love mine, wouldn't trade for a OR, BUT I do wish it was just 1 TRD model that had everything... guess then there would be no point of the pro :notsure:

I see no reason to buy a Sport but yes, it will handle some mild offroading.

90% driver, 10% vehicle. I've seen it too many times to count over the past 40 years i have been driving. Off or on road, the driver is most important.

I do wish they made the DCLB in trdOR second gen because a locker and MTS would be great insurance but I agree with the notion to just get out there. Most of us aren't putting wheels in the air or other similar circumstances where a locker is necessary and good driving and experience won't overcome the challenge.

I think you made some good points about your truck and the model you chose. I was with you until you said you would trade a Tacoma to buy a Ranger Raptor. That’s silly.

It may be a good looking truck, but I would rather have the reliability of a slower less gimmicky Tacoma. Just my $.02.

Sport comes with the auto LSD, where the offroad doesn't.

Not since around 2008 or 2009, then switched to Simulated Limited Slip using the braking system.

Ahh ok, didn't realize that but it's the same principle. Power to the low traction wheel is prohibited and directed through the high traction wheel.

Offroad has it. It is not a true LSD, but a traction control system. You still have an open differential.

Right, same thing on the Off Road too, I like the old mechanical version better.

I can't find anywhere that says this is also in the OR. My understanding is that the OR has the locker in its place -Better in certain situations but the LSD is better "all-around". Agree that it would be best if it were mechanical so i'm disappointed there
