I like to play hard rock and turn the stock stereo up full blast and it is not clear. As at lower levels of the volume. Lots of vibration coming from speakers.Or is this a cheap system that Toyota gives you? I have had other manufacture vehicles that would sound sweet with stock radio system listening to quiet riot full blast.

Just crap speakers, I plan on replacing mine.
It's really bad that we pay this much for a nice truck and get these crap speakers, thanks Toyota.
The head unit is not much better, I do plan just to leave that in place.

I just don't understand why they put the speakers above the headliner in the AC.
The stereo shops I took it to around here are just dumbfounded over this.
One place told me I was lying to him when I said the rear speakers were above the headliner.
I had him put his hand over them so he could feel them, very hard to hear these things.

Crappy speakers, crappy head unit. Aftermarket equipment (speakers/amps/head unit) will drastically improve your sound quality. Sound deadening material in the doors helps a lot too. I had all of my stock equipment replaced and could not be happier. Well worth the cost if you like to drive with the music on IMO

I installed the ALPINE universal amp - fit in behind the head unit with decent volume gain and sound quality. Obviously a better head unit and speakers would be nice - but the cost was right and the install was pretty painless.

    crap unit and speakers............

plus, as u turn the volume up, the EQ limits the amount of bass automatically :)

Of course i advise against turning up anything to 11, as it'll likely damage your hearing.
Ok, now with that out of the way...

I have a 2008 Tacoma, and it has the Premium JBL sound system in it. This is the 2 tweets, 2 mids in the front doors, and then the 2 mids in the back doors cause i have the double doors. I also have the sub. The stock stereo left A LOT to be desired. First thing i did was go out and buy a new Receiver. Pioneer X6700BT to be precise. Once fitted and tied in, it sounds 10x better. while it lacks the super-punch you're likely desiring, it does offer more control over the EQ. i would suggest starting with replacing your deck, and then go from there. upgrade one thing as money or time allows. just a suggestion.

All I did was add a 250w amp under the driver seat running a 10" sub behind my back seat. Then, turn off the base to your original door speakers and you will be amazed at how loud and clear they can be.

My stereo is way to loud for me now and perfectly clear. It is the base that distorts the sound, turn it off and they will be loud and clear.

I also love the head unit, the backup camera is sweet and it works perfectly if you just add a little amp.

We're you able to mount the univ amp behind the head unit in the dash?
Also did you run constant power to the amp as recommended?

Yes behind the head unit. And I did run a constant power lead to the unit.

I used the same amp in my 2014 and put it in the glovebox for easy access. Works great!

If you haven't had a look at the factory speakers you should. I've read people's posts about how the oem speakers are crap but until I saw them for myself I didn't really understand how bad they are. The 6x9 front speakers are completely toy like, just really, really cheap paper and a magnet the size of a quarter. I replaced them with a pair of $50 pioneer 2 way 6.5's and the sound is MUCH better than before. Even if you aren't a hard core audiophile you'll appreciate the sound quality of even a decent budget set of replacements.

Improving the sound quality is next on my Taco-todo-list.
Add an AMP and replace door speakers.

What AMP has been my open question. Mounting it behind the head unit makes for easy wiring into the speaker harness.

    Thanks

Another Question: Were you able to find patch cables that plugged directly from the head unit to the AMP? Or did you have to splice into the trucks radio harness?

Out of interest what system do you have in your truck?

I had a 2012 with the standard system and HATED it. I also sampled the JBL system in the Tacoma and also found it limited. I don't hear well to start with so keeping it loud(er) is always my mode.

Now the JBL in my 4Runner works pretty well.

Anyone have an update as far as a patch cable? Much preferred over splicing.

I have ordered a 2015 Tacoma with the JBL. Are you guys saying that if I leave the Entune Head Unit as it is and only upgrade the speakers that I will be able to really tell a difference. Please keep in mind that I am 63 years old. Thanks.

I have a 2008 AC so the sound system it came with was horrible. I changed out the stereo unit, all the speakers, and added kick panel speakers but it still sounded horrible. I had to dyno mat, add polyfil, and taco tunes speaker brackets.
