TORRANCE, Calif. (September 12, 2012) – Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. (TMS) announced today that the Toyota Tundra full-size pickup truck is slated to tow the space shuttle Endeavour during its final journey to the California Science Center on October 13, 2012, where it will go on permanent display. The Endeavour will travel a total of 12 miles from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on city streets to the Science Center, with the Tundra towing the last quarter mile.

Toyota says that the Tundra will tow the space shuttle the last quarter-mile to its final destination. This is a significant load for the Tundra to pull. Toyota uses some creative math and rounds the load the Tundra will drag down the road to 300,000 pounds. The precise weight of the load is actually about 7500 pounds less than that at 292,500 pounds.
The space shuttle weighs 150,000 pounds; the overland transporter weighs 27,500 pounds; beams weigh 44,500 pounds, bolster beams add another 13,500 pounds, and the dollies weigh 52,000 pounds. There’s an additional 5000 pounds of miscellaneous hardware. The Toyota vehicle that will pull the load is a 2012 Tundra CrewMax 1/2-ton truck with no modifications made to increase towing capacity or power output.
The vehicle has a 5.7 L V-8 engine and is rated for a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds. That means the truck will be towing roughly 282,000 pounds over its maximum rated capacity. At least, it only has to go a quarter-mile towing the load.

    Huh?

    Why?

What's the Toyota Tundra's role in the space program?

The semi tractor won't make it the last 1/4 mile?

They probably have trucks from all of the manufacturers pulling it for a short distance at various places on the route.
Toyota just won the lottery (or was high bidder) to tow the final leg.

Gonna' suck for Toyota though... with Cry-sler being in line ahead of them, the shuttle might be a little late :D

I hope this is the case.

I'm sure there is a trail of money here that will explain why a Japanese truck is involved in this stunt. Just think back to when the shuttle was designed and built.....Toyota didn't have a truck with over 120 HP for sale in this country at that time. And they were not built here in the USA either.

25 million for the Science Center to prep the Shuttle and fly it here.

Ya... there's some corporate sponsorship there.

That's pretty dang cool. The Tundra will probably have to pull the dodge and shuttle to where it's supposed to finish, then pull it to the end
