I get nervous when the bottle jack starts rising sideways...

Same here. Although the 6T I have has a thicker/beefier piston that makes me feel a lot better about it.

Also, seeing that crush video posted earlier where the bottle jack takes like 20 tons before it failed...

I was too lazy to watch the video, but I trust my 10 year old bottle jack 1,000%.

Pro tip for ppl that use the factory bottle jack......

Speed up the extension/retraction of the jack by using a cordless drill/impact with a 15/16 socket attached.

By ur logic everyone upgrading suspension and tires are doing it wrong cuz thats not what the engineers designed the vehicle for

Mine too and I have 37’s.

I was thinking how to install coils. But I guess if you jacked up under the control arm it would get high enough to put something under the frame. Originally I was wondering how lifting the frame or center jack point would work with the factory jack (probably because that’s where I use my floor jack).

    I have been corrected. :anonymous:

Lol why does everyone think bean counters make critical engineering decisions? They don't. What they DO is keep us from designing a perfect work of art titanium hydrogen powered jack that would cost more than the truck!
You can't afford engineers without a budget.

Years ago we built a log splitter for our VP of engineering out of obsolete parts that had been fully reserved and ready for scrap. We had fun with it. It split a log in 300 milliseconds. Without the guard it would throw the split pieces 20 ft away. You couldn't lift the pieces up there fast enough. Just for grins we priced it out as if they were new components. The price would have been $80K...
That's what happens when you turn engineers loose with no budget. Amazing machine nobody would or could buy that is dangerous as hell.

Works ok but I have to admit the gearing feels cheesy and it wants to squirm around until making contact. Grip is ok on the rear axle but dubious when you need to lift via the frame. It does the job but I wouldn't have trouble justifying a purchase if I found something I liked better. Note to self: Civilization is based on civility, try harder.

What we practise here we repeat elsewhere, or, start as you mean to go on. Note that I wrote"note to self", the admonishment that followed was as much a reminder to me as delicate hint to anyone else. Trash talk has become a bad habit which takes effort to avoid. Double your satisfaction by thinking of the perfect cutting remark and then not laying it out there.

I have one that leaks now too, but, the feel of the stock jack makes me wonder about the quality of the steel in the gears. In any case it seems there's room for a better quality jack of either type. Chances are it will be just fine until required to perform under sufficiently less than ideal circumstances or one time too many at which point I'll be wishing I'd found something more secure. Maybe something where I can see the gears to know their condition and has a better foot and pad.

The bottle jack used in the video is rated at a 6 ton capacity. My stock jack from Toyota is rated at a 1.5 ton capacity.

The US economy depends on wasteful spending, so thank you, OP for doing your part to fend off the recession.

One thing I didn’t see mentioned is that the stock jack is mechanical, vs a hydraulic bottle jack. With the stock one, you don’t need to worry about the hydraulics failing and having the truck fall down on you.

In the driveway, this is negated with jack stands. In most road side emergency situations, the little jack is all you have. Food for thought.
