    Now, the story:

I received a call from the local PD at around 2:45 this morning that they had found my truck, with the guy who stole it still there. Obviously, he was arrested on the spot and after some questioning, admitted to stealing the truck. However, he said he stole it from a grocery store parking lot about 10 miles from me, when it was originally stolen from my driveway. So, whether he was the original thief or not is unknown. That being said, he DID have an original key (the gray valet one). At the time of the theft, when we did inventory of keys, etc., we did notify insurance that one was missing. Between the truck being in a body shop for a few weeks, my girlfriend (whose key that is) living in an apartment complex that has maintenance men, etc...we are not sure how the key was taken. But, unfortunately I have no great insight as to how these trucks can be taken without a key, as they had one in this instance. I will clarify that this individual has no connection to the body shop and I don't believe they were involved.

So in summary, we don't know how he got the key, but he got it. And if it was someone who frequents her apartment complex, he would have seen my truck there a lot and could have followed me home. Bottom line, the truck is home, it's mostly intact, and it reeks of weed and is filthy inside. To those who mentioned wishing it was gone forever...I don't disagree with you. I will never feel the same driving it again. It feels so weird knowing someone drove and abused my truck for 2 weeks.

LOL I asked the cops the same thing. It's BBQ sauce.

I would also like to add that I do NOT keep a spare in the center console, which is where the thief claims he found it. If it was there, my best guess is the body shop or my girlfriend put it there and forgot about it or didn't tell me, and when he broke in, he found gold in the form of a gray valet key. That I can't answer, but I can say I do not keep a spare inside the truck.

First. Thing I would do is have a narcotics team come and search it. They may have already done this but from the looks of it they should not have let it go in the condition It is in (I.e) weed still scattered all over the truck). The reason I say this is because you don't know what he hid in there. And one traffic stop later you get busted for it. Then I would have my insurance pay for the seats to either be replaced or completely redone due to a illegal drug being used in the truck.

Too bad he wasn't a meth head. Here in TN your truck would be wrapped with clear wrap for a minimum of a month then stripped of anything extra flammable and then set on fire by the sheriff's dept. And then disposed of the remains. If it were meth.

    That's awful!

Coming from someone else who keeps the interior and exterior of his truck as flawless as possible, having something like that happen to mine would not be something I'd ever want to deal with.

Yeah, it's incredibly dirty. I also keep it immaculate, so that almost brought me to tears, literally. I've attached a few more photos below. The guy even used the cup holder behind the shifter as an ash tray...

Also, in regards to the drugs. I live in Colorado, so weed is legal anyway. The officers already searched the car, and told me to call them if I find anything. I am not driving the car until it gets a new interior and/or full detail, so I think I'm ok there. I've also searched the car head to toe and didn't find anything. Good idea though!

Yikes, looks like he broke apart some swishers or cigars and dumped the tobacco right there to make a blunt. Don't ask how I know.

Op I am so sorry this has happened to you and your beloved Tacoma. I would be absolutely distraught and I'm not in love with my truck. But the thought of it being damaged, abused, molested etc... Would leave me sleepless for months over the issue.

If you plan to keep this, I recommend taking it to TOYOTA and have them replace every fluid in the drivetrain, and check for metal shavings. I wouldn't put it past a thief, to do unimaginable things to a vehicle whilst in their possession. Things like intentionally drive it in 4wd on the street, neutral bombs (that's where you rev it up in neutral and drop it in drive) drive recklessly. Hit random things and drive over foreign objects and obsticals you would otherwise.

I would demand your insurance company perform an alignment as well. Worst case, get a good detail on the entire truck, then cash out on the fantastic Tacoma re-sale value and buy another, problem and sleepless nights fixed.

I would check with insurance company about getting locks and ignition rekeyed. They might cover it.

Yeah, the truck is no longer in my long-term plans. But you're 100% correct, and all those things will be thoroughly checked.

    My condolences to you.

I'll echo what has already been said...if my truck was stolen and I got it back, I don't think I could own it not knowing what happened, especially with that interior situation. I'd probably walk away from it and take the loss just to get rid of it.

Maybe I'm crazy, but that's just how I feel.

Installed Overhead Compass and Temperature Display along with outside temperature sensor and wiring; LED lights reverse backup; LED license plate lights; Added GTA Bluetooth Audio kit to stock radio for iphone audio; Spare tire steel braided air hose extension connection to rear bumper; Installed new headlights along with new bulbs PIAA H4 XTreme and for fog lights PIAA H10 XTreme bulbs. Installed new hood with "hood-scoop". Installed Predator Side Steps. Replaced front chrome grill with customized color matched (Desert Sand Mica) grill with added TOYOTA lettering (also in matched color), installed and secured tailgate anti-theft devices. Also installed a new external TPMS monitor for all 4 tires.
This reminds me of when my 1986 Toyota X-Tra Cab was stolen, twice! Yes, that's right twice! I bought it brand new, driven off the lot, back in 1986. It's a shame that you really can't have anything nice looking without someone else wanting it and willing enough to steal it from you. I had it looking decent, nothing really fancy, just had a lift kit, nice tires and rims, always kept it nice and clean, tinted windows, original factory radio cassette, along with the basic anti-theft devices and that's it. But I found out real quick that it does not matter what type of anti-theft device, alarm, etc. you have on it. If they want to steal your truck, they are going to steal it and that's it.
I know that nasty feeling that comes over you when you walk out in the morning ready to start the day and discover that your truck is.....gone!
The first time it was stolen, I lived in a apartment complex. It was 1989 and I walk out ready to get to work and you guessed it... gone! All that was left on the ground was broken glass. You see back then the Toyota X-tra cab had a small triangle window on each side and that's what they broke to gain access inside. Anyway report it to the police and insurance. After about a week or so get a call from the city police department asking if I am the owner of a 1986 Toyota X-tra cab that was found at the end of a dead end street that appeared to have parts missing. Anyway they said that I could pick it up at the city pound. I get there and they take me to it and when I first saw it my jaw just dropped! I didn't even want to claim it. It was basically totally stripped! I mean everything was gone just the shell remained and the engine. Well after it was towed to the dealership the insurance paid for everthing and the dealership replaced everthing that was needed. It looked all original with exception only to the interior upholstry. Toyota no longer offered that type of style so they matched the interior close to what I originally had. It ran smooth and was smelling brand new! I was one happy individual to say the least. I had my Toyota truck back!!! This time I had an alarm installed in it, at least for piece of mind but.....
Second time, 1995, I was happy with my Toyota X-tra cab because it was in very good shape, looked sharp and clean, still had style and compliments and the fact that it was coming up on 10 years owning it. This time, I'm married with a new born, renting a house, walk out to start the day and get to work and you guessed it.....gone! This time nothing left on the drive way ground just empty space! Quickly that same empty feeling sets in with rushing memories of back in 1989! This time it's all different. My truck was never found! Never! Even to this day I sometimes think I'll get a call asking me if I am the owner of a 1986 Toyota X-tra Cab but in reality I know that's just dreaming and wishful thinking. It's gone and probably in some chop shop, Mexico, or in some far off junk yard, who knows. It's all history now. Well afterward I purchased a new 1996 Dodge Ram truck and had that till 2008 when I purchased a new Toyota Tacoma. Since then I drive a 2008 Toyota Tacoma and I am happy! Hopefully it will never get stolen!?
My apologies for the long ass story.
