Hey all, my catalytic converter got stolen a while back but since I was driving it at the time I didnt worry about it.

It's up and running again and I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions on cats to buy for a decent price, and how hard would it me to replace by my self? I'm still in school and dont want to pay a mechanic for somthing I can do on my own.
I dont know alot about vehicle and Iv only ever changed my breaks and done my oil, but I plan to do alot more to this truck.

Where are you located? Go on rockauto. Even the CARB ones are far less than 1500.

Haha, rockauto is not sketchy. It’s just the layout of the website. Very simple.

Rock auto deals in volume so their website looks like it’s from 1999. Just make sure it has an EO number that matches your vehicle.

Can you weld? Replacing stolen cats will likely require welding

I believe your truck should have two cats being an 01. Do you have a picture of what your remaining exhaust looks like?

I can't pass emissions with a straight pipe unfortunately, otherwise I totaly would.

I agree with others that Rockauto is a totally legitimate site. A quick search on their site for 2001 Taco shows most of their catalytic converter come with flanges welded on. You may get lucky if they cut on the cat side of the flange when they stole it. Your rig must sound loud as hell.

Yeah, it's like a harley when I start it up I dont have a problem with it sounding like that, I looked into just a straight pipe but I need it to pass emissions unfortunately.

Since you're in a part of CO that requires testing, you'll need a CARB-compliant cat approved for your truck. That's what @Dalandser meant by "make sure it has an EO [Executive Order] number that matches your vehicle."

I'm not in a part of CO that does emissions testing so I can't tell you how strict the inspections are, but it'd be a bummer to get flagged for a noncompliant cat after doing all that work.

The most unfortunate thing is that it forces you to buy a more expensive catalytic converter to do the same job. I did see some CARB compliant cats on the rockauto site earlier.
