    In AZ?

CARB mufflers are more like $400-$900 from MF (depending on front or rear). Ideally in CA / CO with a matching EO you don't have to worry about a nitpicky smog tech's visual inspection. I'm sure someone could find a lazy shop and get by with a Federal cat, but I don't know if they flag your vehicle if they catch you with a mismatched one.

    It's CARB not COARB right?

Do they test for more than OBDII check engine codes?

Pre 99 have to do a sniff test and they check under the hood and (if especially nitpicky) that the stamped number on the cat matches the sticker under the hood. Sounds like parts of CO are CARB and some are not. In CA there are some counties that are not CARB, but they're few and far between.

Sounds very scientific and objective of them.

Agreed. Somewhere there's logic for keeping all that in place for the less than 10-15% of the population that drives 25+ year old vehicles to reduce CO2 while the rest of the population buys a new car every 5-6 years. I'm sure there's no air pollution in the making of new cars...

Yeah, it's pretty annoying that you have to pass emissions with a vehicle that's older than like 20 years because it is harder to meet the standards at somepoint because of the chance of the parts being discontinued.

Wow! I didn't realize that 14 other states had adopted California air resources board (CARB) standards. Any time they give us a list of parts manufacturers that we have to buy from in order to remain compliant it just opens the doors for corruption. I'm all for clean air but give me a break. If they stick the sniffer in the pipe and you pass you should be good to go.

I paid $600 out the door for 2 new CARB legal Magnaflow cats installed back in 2018 at a local exhaust shop. I'm sure nowadays it would be a lot more but still cheaper than OEM. The nice thing with 1st gens is that we have a lot of aftermarket 50 state legal options. I would be wary of going too cheap though if you don't want the P0420 code to be giving you grief.

I used the magnaflow part lookup for my 08 when I needed new cats and they were like $375 for the upper and $800 for the lower. It’s really up to you if you want a matching EO number for your truck’s vin, but I’m sure there’s some techs that will look the other way (or not at all).

Youre not going to get any longevity out of a $140 cat.....
Theres a reason they cost very little, they barely have any precious metal in them at that cost....
The precious metals & the amount of it, is what makes them effective...

I get more than $140 recycling the Ford ones I take-off that are no-longer any good & are being replaced due to a check engine light p0420 p0430 codes...

You only have to pass emissions here in the city/Denver & greater metro area. If you live out in the country, no emissions test. Have you already registered your truck here? Youre supposed to do the air test every 2 years. You can try driving by the air meter, those are on the exit or on ramps & check your status a week later. That’s the free option, or you go to air care Colorado & pay the $25 bucks.

Remember the greater metro area of Denver is the only part of our state that does the air care bullshit. You can look up where the free station testing modules are on the air care map. Most of these fuckers out here don’t even have license plates so don’t stress too much about it

Ha, funny, I ride 2 strokes, and I like the smell, especially running castor 927! Would love for my '87 4runner to smell like that!

Tbh 2 strokes smell better than my cored out exhaust - not quite enough oil blow by to make a sweet smelling mixture. Plus you don’t ride a 2 stroke with a sealed cab with HVAC sucking in the fumes haha.

In Texas they just did away with ALL yearly passenger vehicle mechanical inspections statewide. There are 17 counties in Texas out of 254 total that do emissions testing yearly. Vehicles omitted from all yearly emissions testing in those 17 counties are 1. Vehicles that are 25 years or older. 2. Diesel non-commercial vehicles. 3. Motorcycles. 4. Vehicles that are registered in another state or country. So if you are living in Texas and your car is registered in California you are omitted from yearly smog tests here, in the only 17 counties that test for smog, that is. :)
