    Thats just how we roll

every 2nd or 3rd year when you pay your taxes they mail you a new plate with new letters/numbers unless you have a personalized or specialized plate

    Stolen plates.... oh lord.

So here in Maryland the new thing is to shave the stickers off the plates. I came out from work one day (State Prosecutors Office) to find that my month sticker was gone. They left the year sticker on there. Oh well, shit happens. So the next morning I head over to the MVA to get a new sticker. Before going in I checked the plate again to ensure it was just the month sticker, it was. I go in, explain it all, and pay for a new set of stickers. I head out to my truck to put them on..... someone had stolen the rear plate off my truck in the MVA parking lot.

Moral of the story.... don't live in Baltimore Maryland.

You'd be surprised in how many plates get stolen. Most of the time they are stolen to put on the same vehicle because the other vehicle is going to be committing some sort of crime etc. If your plate is on the same truck if the cops pull them over etc, it's harder to track. Also you get people who are just dumb and steal plates. There isn't anything that you can do to when it comes to plate left, it's a common thing.

I wish someone had a camera on me when I went back inside and had to explain it. They had a State Trooper working in the office. He took a report for me and I was able to get a new set of plates. We talked about the stolen plates issue here. He said one deterrent was to get personalized plates. They are too easy to spot and memorable, so they are stolen a lot less. So now all my vehicles have personalized plates.... and they have the theft deterrent screws holding them on.

Of course, the plate being too memorable can work against you sometimes. I'd rather get a plate that's like 8B87Z2...

It happens a lot. I'm not sure if this has been said yet but I use bolts like the kind with the smooth head and the square on the back where the thread starts and a nut on the back with loctite on the nut for extra measure. Haven't gotten one stolen yet, like all things if a thief want's it bad enough he will get it but why do the extra work for mine when the car next to it just has convenient little phillips head screws holding theirs on?
