My Tacoma SR5 was stolen. Truck found abandoned (trashed). When stolen the gas tank was almost empty. The truck was driven 30 miles to a remote hazelnut orchard and left there. The Marion County Sheriff's Office called and told me the location of the truck. When I went to retrieve it the thief had left the hood up, but it didn't look like anything was disturbed.
The truck didn't appear to have been hotwired, no cut or spliced wires, no punched out ignition.
I have no clue how they stole it. Now, my question pertains to why the engine will not start.
I figure the thief's abandoned it without any fuel so I brought 5 gallons of gas with me and added it to the gas tank- still would not start, used starting fluid- wanted to start but wouldn't. One thing I did notice was that the gas gauge was reading at around 1/2 a tank full. There were diesel cans close to where the truck was and the truck had the smell of diesel in the cab.. however the gas door was shut and didn't look like it had been pried open, or that anything had been added to the gas tank. So, I am uncertain if the idiots put diesel into the tank or not. (the diesel smell was from where they had poured diesel onto the floor pan and it was soaked into the carpet- we assume they were going to torch the truck but were scared off by the orchard owner)
I am not sure if fuel pump might have sucked crud from the bottom of the tank when they were doing some Duke's of Hazard whoopty do's in the orchard (they broke a leaf spring), or even if the fuel pump is working at all. How do I check to see if there is diesel mixed with gas in the gas tank?
Trying to figure this out before taking it to Auto Repair shop.

    Sorry.

Get the truck towed to a location where you can work on it. Get a transfer pump and empty the tank, and dispose of the contents. Replace the filter, etc... put some fresh gas in there and see what you get. I'd also be checking the wiring more closely. Check the fuses in the engine bay- EFI especially. Pull the interior panel below the steering wheel and inspect the wiring. Check the battery too :notsure: Maybe it's just a loose connection from the donuts they did.

If you get it rolling again, look into a concealed kill switch- there are some threads here. There isn't really a bulletproof solution, but some deterrent is better than none.
