Tucson, thanks for keeping an eye out for us. I agree it does seem fishy.

Who would be more likely to steal a Tacoma tailgate than a Tacoma owner that knows how easily the can be taken off....

 

To be honest, what can we really do? Can we call the police and get him arrested? No, all that has been said is speculation.

But this is a good reminder to do the tailgate theft prevention mod. Probably the only good thing to come out of this thread.

 

My theory:

The tailgate is his and legit...it's the Tacoma that it's sittin' in that's stolen.

It's obvious. He had an alien encounter with an intergalactic tail gate party. They had been drinking and driving, speeding through the galaxy (you know the type!) and one of the little bastards dropped his tailgate. It fell to earth, of course, landing perfectly in the back of this poor schmoes tacoma, without damaging it (non-earth tailgates have been known to land softly). He thinks its a miracle, but its really aliens. However, he already had a tailgate and didn't need this one...coincidence? I think not...

So whose buying the alien tailgate?

Id go look at it and write the vin down. The 2nd gen Tacoma's have stickers on a lot of its body parts with the vin on it to track stuff.

I bet the tailgate and truck are his, but HE is stolen...er, I mean lost, or something...Um, yeah.

My point ktm, Ca has a law that prohibits the sale and possession of car parts where the identification number has been removed. As mentioned, if the VIN is on the tailgate it's legit, if it's missing it's probably stolen and becomes contraband. Here is the statute..

10751. (a) No person shall knowingly buy, sell, offer for sale,
receive, or have in his or her possession, any vehicle, or component
part thereof, from which any serial or identification number,
including, but not limited to, any number used for registration
purposes, that is affixed by the manufacturer to the vehicle or
component part, in whatever manner deemed proper by the manufacturer,
has been removed, defaced, altered, or destroyed, unless the vehicle
or component part has attached thereto an identification number
assigned or approved by the department in lieu of the manufacturer's
number.
