I'm definitely not complaining. In fact, the more I drive it, the more I appreciate the powerful brakes.

I'll bet they're really nice for towing. I'll find that out this spring when it's time to bust out the camper.

The question is: Are the '12 brakes the same as the '13??

I'm not gonna go back and read the whole thread, but I feel like most of the comments about overly powerful brakes came from '13 owners.

In order for the ABS to work you will need to keep pressure on the brakes.

A pure assumption on your point. They would fix it if there is something wrong if you insist...

They won't fix anything if there's nothing wrong....and there is nothing wrong.

I had two legitimate issues with my '09, and they wouldn't even fix them.

Dealers are as useless as tits on a bull.

I have a 2011 Off Road Access Cab with 41k miles. Mine do the same. It may get a slightly better with mileage, but at this point they still grab hard. Different types of tacomas do brake differently. Ive driven other tacomas that were new that didn't do this.

I agree. The other trucks I drove we're non-OR and they were the ones that didn't have the 'harder' brakes.
Also, I did notice this when I first test drove my truck but I wasn't worried about being a problem.

After 8,000 km my brakes have softened from ridiculously grabby to a bit grabby. YMMV.

Found a super easy mod to fix this by accident today!

I was hauling about a thousand pounds in the bed of full 55 gallon drums up A winding mountain fire road and not only did it ride smoother on and off road,
The brakes worked like any regular vehicle does!

    Immediately after I offloaded
I stopped at a light so hard my seatbelt locked up and the car behind me nearly went jousting with my hitch...

    I'll call this one

After a few months with the '13.....I can say that I love the brakes.

The extra power is just awesome, and they suit my driving style <-- perpetual late breaker here

My brakes on my 12 are super touchy and soft.. I think its only a 12, 13 problem. Other then that the brakes are super solid. I drive a 08 4 runner around a lot and the brakes on that thing are way firmer and feel much better imo.

'12/'13 OR have hydroboost brake system for ATRAC. i had a 2007 Tacoma OR which was more linear. my '12 OR is like a switch on or off with very little modulation. that pulse under your foot when you slightly touch the the pedal is the hydroboost priming. when i first picked up my truck i made an appointment to have it checked out because the brakes were different than my 2007.

My 2011 OR is the same way. You can feel it push back on the pedal. Getting bigger tires eliminated the sudden braking. Now it's more like regular brakes.

Have you thought about adjusting the rear brakes?

I know this is nothing new...but just an interesting piece of info.

I've got a 2013 TRD Sport DCSB as a loaner and the brakes are 100% different than m 2013 TRD OR AC. I've got approximately 6,900 miles on mine and the brakes while maybe slightly better still aren't all that great.

I unhooked my battery and bled all the excess power out of the system when I was installing my auxiliary fuse panel and when I reinstalled it, the system is noticeably less grabby than when I first bought it.

I still dislike the non-linearity of the brakes. Maybe it's my BFG AT's, but I get almost too much initial bite and then a dead zone. There have been more than a few times I've nearly hit the car in front of me because of it.

I'm still learning these GD brakes.

this thread reminds me of an older gentlemen I know. he told me once of when he and his dad went to buy a new car. they decided on one with a fancy, new concept to them, "automatic transmission". well, as some know, automatics (especially back then) typically have much wider brake pedals. the old man takes it for a spin, and instinctively mashes his left foot into what his brain assumed would be a clutch pedal at the first stop. no seatbelts worn so the poor feller broke his nose on the steering wheel, and saturated what the salesman quickly referred to as now HIS car with booger blood.

that man is still around, have to laugh whenever I see him

And now with 8K miles on the clock, the brakes are back to normal power.

I was afraid this would happen. I really got used to the super-stoppers. :jerkoff:

When I first got my Tacoma 8-9 years ago, I wasn't used to the brakes, so I initially had similar problem. After you break them in, and get used to your truck, you will love it.

since your truck is new, you want to break it in before you try pushing it's limits.

My 09 has 200K on it and it's just like you guys describe, so no it doesn't get better. When I first got the truck I thought there was something wrong with the brake booster. The pedal only moves about 1/4" in total from released to fully depressed and activating abs on dry pavement. Very hard to get good control of your breaks, especially on a slippery hillside or snow.

I have a 12 and I felt they are the best brakes I have ever had in a vehicle.

Sounds like you just need to relearn how to brake?

If you really stomp on the pedal it will stop like a MoFo.
