I believe responsible gun owners need to stop playing into the arguments of the anti-gun crowd.

Frequently I’ll read a post that starts out with a line similar to: “What’s a good handgun for home defense”, or “seeking handgun for home defense”. Now for the record, I don’t think a handgun is a good choice of weapon for a firearm that never needs to be concealed or carried for any distance. However this post is not about gun types or personal opinions on hardware. Please don’t respond by posting you have a - fill in the blank gun- , for………..whatever purpose.

For years the anti-gun folks have posed the question, “why do you need a handgun”. They also routinely put forth variations of that question such as, “why does one need an assault rifle / more than one gun / a high capacity magazine / blah, blah, blah”. I don’t go around asking others why they need the right to peacefully assemble or why they need to own property. Don’t ask me why I wish to exercise my rights. The end result of the anti-gun campaign is that while they attempt to restrict the private ownership of all firearms, they particularly attempt to vilify handguns. When someone feels a need to justify their ownership of a handgun they are lending credence to that vilification by claiming there’s some need to be filled. Once you submit that you only need a handgun to fill a specific role; they will simply build an argument that your need is not sufficient to justify ownership of the evil handgun. Don’t play that game. You don’t need to play that game and you can’t win that game.

Responsible adults who may legally possess a firearm do NOT need to justify their acquisition of a particular type of firearm by adding the caveat that it will be, “for home defense”. If you want a handgun and you are able to possess one legally, then get one! In fact, get as many as you want. Stop playing their game.

I’m not seeking a debate on the types of firearms for home defense, that’s a topic for another thread. I’m looking for opinions about the perceived need for justification of the private ownership of something that’s protected by the Constitution.

Truth. It isn't necessary to justify any purchase. Is it necessary to drink my own urine? No, but I do it anyways because it's sterile and I like the taste.

It is funny how we as consumers try to justify everything we buy. If you want it, buy it, as long as there is food on the table and roof overhead, who cares?

I agree...anyone that asks me "why do you need to hunt" or "why do you need guns" i just ask them, why do you need a car? Why do you need clothes? I don't need a car and i don't need clothes. They are there to fill a need....though most clothes and cars are there to fill a WANT not a need. And my firearms are a WANT that is justified and protected by our Constitution...therefore, it is kind of like the expensive car that the rick man WANTS but doesn't need. Or the clothes the woman wants but doesn't need. I want my firearms because i'm allowed to have them. I want to explore and learn as much as i can in my life and there are so many things to be learned from responsible gun ownership. I often don't speek up on things like this because my anologies are bad....but you get the point.

And if i need to remove my post or edit it, i'd be happy to... cheers to the OP

America is the greatest place on Earth, even if it is led and currently controlled buy a horde of uneducated people who complain about things they know nothing about. I'm not going to complain that i want high heels banned because i think tey are dangerous....when i know nothing about high heels...i'm going to keep my mouth shut and let those who enjoy their high heels enjoy them.

...rights enumerated in the BOR are not based on "need"... that is a specious argument by antis who generally consumed in projecting their own flaws and fears onto the rest of us... so, when confronted by the bubble wrap society, ...remember, it's a "republic, ...if we can keep it"... ;)

Very well said. I own no guns, but in no way am I opposed or have the need to tell others how to live their lives. I believe all this gun control legislature is complete BS. Shoot on.

Why do you need to call anyone supporting some restrictions on weapons as " anti-gun " ?

I do not believe nit picking type or use of gun to be of the governments control. Waiting periods aside, I don't think that bans on guns are going to limit crime. I am of the school of thought that if you ban guns, only criminals will have them( I only own a bat and a machete for the record). I guess the other school of thought is the exisisting countries that do not have a high historic rate of gun ownership do have a significantly lower rate of gun violence. But we are 'merica and we're here and unintelligible. gerswinklestits and guns FTMFW.

No. it makes you anti 50 cal in the public's hands. Not addressing the broad spectrum "anti-gun" . Others may feel differently.

...actually, .50 machine guns are legal to own in most states i believe... legal to own in OH w/ CLEO sign off i believe... running ammo through them is so costly though, you really only see them at the machine gun shoots/events ....too rich for my blood though :D

I don't own a gun, but not opposed to it. Although I do fell a bit ridiculous when I am at a friends house and the Uzi's, AR's and .50 cal BMG's come out. Makes me want to rescind my american card when their personalities go all redneck dumbass.
