    Hey everyone,

Got a personal decision to make, and wanted some personal opinions from people in the community about what they'd do, because I keep changing my decision.

I own a 03' DCSB 3.4L Off-Road, that I got from my grandfather (who's alive) for a good deal a while ago. It's been extremely reliable, has 160k miles, but the short bed makes it about as useful as a Ford Maverick to me. I need the space to sleep and transport things semi/very often. I don't transport people often enough to validate the interior space, and would vastly prefer an access cab w/ manual transmission in the future.

I'm getting a new truck that'll be my daily and project. I'm a student who moves often and doesn't have the means for more than one vehicle. I'm torn between selling the truck, or returning it to my grandfather, for him to use but for me to remain as the owner. I love the first gens, probably the only tacoma I'll own again in the future, but this one doesn't exactly fit my current needs.

So, would you sell it and cash out on the current market? Hold onto it? Because of personal desire or as an asset?

    Appreciate any feedback

You’re on an enthusiast forum. You will get many “don’t sell, you will regret it later” opinions.

Really comes down to sentimental value vs. cash. If you can afford to not sell and value the sentiment, keep it.

If it’s an appliance to you, sell for top dollar.

It all comes down to what it means to you.

Yes you could probably make some good cash from selling it.

But how strong is your personal attachment to it?

If I were you, and didn’t need the cash, I would return it to grandpa and keep it in your name if he’s okay with it. Then when day when he passes, or you have the desire, reclaim it.

It sounds like you want it but it doesn’t fit your current life style. That could change in the future and I’m sure your grandpa would appreciate you helping him out and you leave the window of possibility open in the future

Not knowing all you know, we’re not in a position to decide for you. I will say things to consider are does the truck have sentimental value by you or your grandfather? That should weigh heavily in your decision. Good luck!

Of course. That's why I'm asking fellow enthusiasts! I've owned 4 tacomas, and would probably get a Manual Access cab first gen if I got another, but that's what suits my life now. Maybe one day I'll have a need to transport people, which it still ain't great at but does the job.

I can afford it, and I'm torn on the sentiment of it. Keep flip-flopping on my decisions.

I sold my ‘00 Tacoma to get my ‘02 Tundra. I regret selling a little but back then I was in your shoes, one vehicle max.

I would stuff it at your grandfathers unless you are so crushed for cash that you have to sell it. Give yourself a year or two and then make a call.

I never thought I’d miss my ‘02 Tundra when I sold it in 2010 but I bought it back last year and it’s been a real joy. First gens with a known history are special, even AT. Plenty of time to buy more MT’s too.

Oh, and in first Gen Tacoma speak, it’s XtraCab, right? Kinda useless space in my opinion compared to RC but the v6 is what it’s all about so sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

Just remember, you cannot unsell it.

Sounds like you are keeping the truck.

Or if it’s that clean, sell it to me :D

You’re a student and getting a new truck? Most students are hurting for $$$, I know I was (oh so long ago), a new truck just wasn’t a reality. Why not forego a new truck and make the old taco work until you graduate. If you have to haul things get a trailer.
If you absolutely are going to get a new truck then see if grand pops wants it back for awhile until your life gets settled, then decide what you want to do with the truck. If grandpa doesn’t want it then sell it.

Nearly always true. I'm the exception. I sold to a friend (one of very few I invited to my wedding so high on my list of most admired friends) and he had it for a bit more than a decade. Then I asked for it back.

Technically I remember him saying "if you want it back you can have it" when I sold to him. It was towards the end of finishing a ton of work on my house at the time and I had parking stress from the neighbors, plus I was in a downsizing mood trying to simplify my life. I rolled in my '06 corolla for a decade, switched to a prius, and finally, perhaps around a "normal" mid life crisis age I decided I wanted back into truck gang.

While AT isn't entirely to die for, my dad actually sold his '03 xtracab prerunner and regretted it. He sold to the gf's bro who quickly resold for profit. Oh, but it was "ok" b/c the guy gave my dad half the profit? Geez. Just got my dad into an '06 DC a few months ago from another TW guy who went 3rd gen and he's happy now but he'd be happier if he still had that '03.

Granted, selling a Taco for a Tundra is less regret, but finding clean first gen of either is not easy to do.

I'd keep it in the family unless or until there's a real need to liquidate.

Truck is a project. He mentioned it in a different post. I think it was a 2000 Tundra.
To be fair, you didn’t unsell it. Just purchased it back! :D

Good advice. Clean older Tacoma’s are getting harder and harder to come by. Especially well maintained ones with minimal rust.

As Toyota moves away from the V6 towards turbo’s and hybrids and such, I’d imagine older Tacoma’s (up through and including 3rd gens) will maintain their value as people keep the good ones and junkers get sent to the crusher.

I'm an older student, who's good with money. I buy and sell trucks somewhat frequently. My 'new' truck is 18 years old as well. I like to travel, surd, and need something I can sleep out of somewhat regularly. I move a lot, and often have 1-3 month periods with no home, so I need a comfortable place to sleep. Just for the sake of weekending and surfing, the DCSB tacoma doesn't cut it. I may as well have an outback.

I appreciate the sentiment of common sense though. You aren't wrong, but it doesn't apply to me. I'm trying to build out a rig that can explore this continent and those south of us with ease. I think I'll be following your advice in regards to my tacoma. Thanks

I want to hold onto it! Just dragged down by the reality that I wouldn't mind trading it in for a access cab MT, which was actually my grandpa's truck growing up. He sold that one, bought this one in regret, and then didn't use it much at all. I think we both deeply miss his low mile Access Cab MT V6.

Maybe I'll sell this one, find our dream truck, and let him hold onto that instead.

And the plot thickens. Good luck with your decision.

If you do decide to sell, post it up on here. If it’s as clean as you say, should sell quickly.
