going to be gone for six months so i decided to get a battery tender instead of disconnecting my battery cable. so i got the thing and it says in the instructions "if left on the vehicle for a long period of time to check it from time to time to see if the battery is unusually warm to make sure it is not in a thermal runaway condition". i thought the purpose of these was so you could go away for a perid of time and keep the battery charged, did not know it might cause the battery to blow up! now i am scared to leave it on for the time i will be gone. any comments?

I've never used a battery tender before but I've been gone four seperate time for a year at a time. I just disconnect the battery, fill the gas tank up, up in fuel stabilizer before filling up, and take off. When I get back, never had an issue. That was once w/ a 97 Silverado and three times w/ a 2005 Tundra.

Don't get the cheaper battery tender that looks like a laptop power supply.
Get the larger one in a ventilated box. It automatically kicks down to trickle.
