Yesterday, the lower heating element went out on my parents' GE Electric cooktop stove. This is the house's main heat source. So today, I bought the element to replace the burnt one with. Simple process. You remove the two 1/4 screws with a nut driver or socket, pull the element forward to expose the wires it connects to, and disconnect them. Well, when I pulled the element forward, there was a loud pop, and sparks flew from the connection. I had not realized that it was still plugged in, as my dad had already been messing with it earlier this morning. I unplugged it and installed the new element, but the stove will not turn on. The clock won't come on, the stovetop won't come on, and the oven itself won't come on. Nothing. Figure I fried something, but I'm not sure what. I'm a mechanic, not an electrician. :p So does anyone have any ideas of what I should check? The breaker was not thrown. I went out and checked the panel. The stove is plugged in.There do not seem to be any loose wires or burnt wires- the only "burnt stuff" is the insulation around where the wires for the upper heating element go through the wall of the stove, and that is reportedly normal.
    Any help would be appreciated!

Edit: Just wanna add that when I checked the breaker box to see if it had tripped, it was still in the "on" position. I turned it off and then back on, as I know that sometimes in these older houses, a tripped breaker may appear to still be on.

Fixed it! Houston, we have heat! :D
Went back to the breaker box and turned every switch off and back on, and now it works. So my guess is the oven one is mislabeled.
