Always liked a loud engine, I do it for myself and anyone else can deal with it for the few seconds we cross paths. Although I do agree that it generally attracts more dudes than gals. My current truck exhaust isn't super loud but my bike can be near deafening when I really get on it. I use the bike exhaust like a horn though in traffic and passing when people are getting out of their lane.

x2 regarding the bike exhaust. And on smaller engines like that, modifying the exhaust in that manner makes a significantly noticeable difference in power/torque.

But loud to be loud? Only if it's done well, IMHO. The moaning-frog, fart-in-a-can systems on Honda Civics are annoying as sh!t and don't even sound good half the time. But a buddy of mine has an exhaust system on his Tacoma that's throaty, rumbles, and is only loud when he smashes the skinny pedal. Yes, "done well" is a very subjective term. But in this case, all 9 of us in the shop agreed with each other when we first heard it. To each, his own.

Its not 100% sure he'll get a CEL. The cats are still there, and there is still a delta between the up/downstream O2. The only way he'd get a light is if ambient air was backflowing into the after-cat pipes and reaching the downstream O2. Some vehicles are more sensitive than others to this, depending on the length of after-cat tube that remains after unbolting the muffler-side tube.
With that said, yeah these engines sound like crap and I'd never change out the stock exhaust myself ;)

Hey, there's an idea! I'll blame it on the engine!

I have had 2 vr6 straight piped. My Corrado was stock and sounded great. My mk2 vr had very lumpy cams and sounded like a beast.

VW can make some crappy stuff, but I love that motor

Lost of torque and power; too much flow isn't always good. Your low-midrange will suffer; however top end might improve a bit but you'll also increase fuel consumption.

That was true in the days of carburetors but modern fuel injection keeps this from occurring. Of course if your hooning at high revs you'll consume more.
