An f'ing Hammer... Tap tap tap with a hammer on the new key in the lock and it turned. PSYCHE!
I can make this work. I can leave this plain key in the ignition and still start the truck with the remote starter.

COOL! Now don't turn the lock all the way to the lock position til you get the lock fixed. That link I posted describes the trick to getting the lock cylinder out.

The wafers were gummed up. A good locksmith can take it all apart and clean it all out.

    Thought I'd update...
Turning the truck off does NOT reset the immobilizer. That happens when the key is removed. Got tired of hammering the key, so i removed the cylinder.

Called around for a new ignition cylinder and was quoted $312. from the local dealer and $272. from the dealer near home. That does not include programming the new keys.

Called locksmiths and got a price of $150. to rebuild and 2 new keys. Taking the transponder out of my keys and putting them in New shells. I said ooook. Found a locksmith down here that'll rebuild it for $35. no keys. I'll use the one i had cut at the dealer to make keys from blanks I'll get on Amazon and I'll get that key programmer from eBay.

Looks like I'll have it all fixed for under a C note.

This will probably be a bigger problem with smart keys and push button ignition.

I used to be a locksmith way back when. Very common problem with these Toyota’s. It’s kind of a design flaw but mostly a result of the “split” wafer system in your lock cylinder. I believe there are 8 normal wafers and two pairs of split wafers at the tip. Split wafers bend easily and over the years become the weak link in the system. The other half of the problem is Toyota’s “tip stop” keys which wear out and change where your key stops when you push it in.

You got the right idea bringing the cylinder to get repaired by a local locksmith. Where I used to work it was $35 yo repair if the cylinder wasn’t bunged up. And then we would cut/clone you a new key to factory spec to fix the tip stop issue.

From my experience when customers try to “be a hero” and program their own keys they only throw money away. it’s no guarantee that you can get it to program. Curious to see how this goes

Not trying to be a hero. Just trying to save a few bucks. I've had keys made/programmed before. It's not cheap.
And as I was stuck in this parking lot calling locksmiths, of the 4 I called, one called back, and in not so many words said, I'm not coming out there; a 20 minute drive...
    You tube to the rescue...

yeah I understand. Local guys are usually too busy or understaffed to travel that far for little payout haha. Also I have to mention, Beware of “fly by night” locksmiths that take over the top results in google searches. They often go with generic names or even ones similar to legit local locksmiths. And long story short they will charge insane amounts to fix your problem, or leave you hanging in the end

Just out of curiosity, how much stuff do you have on your key ring with the truck keys?

4 keys, 2 of which are for padlocks. A 2 way remote and an attachment that let's me add another key or small ring to. It's hardly ever used, but very convenient when needed.

The rebuilt cylinder works great and the original key still works. It's kinda sticky though so I'll use the non chipped key for now.

Just saw this, same thing happened to my 07 after about 250k miles. Took the cylinder out, used a screw driver for a day or so and had a locksmith rebuild the cylinder to match my existing keys. $35-40 and it worked perfectly. No new keys. Congrats OP.
