Ok mine is manual, i thought maybe this was a manual only issue. Ill bring this vid to the dealers as well, i need a reason to get this shit fixed. One of the techs though the starter but then the head guy gave some excuse of like some initial startup something to do with pressure thats a normal sound but i have never once heard this on any car.

Yeah they said the same to me for the most part but i mean idk id look at the starter if i were them. Its gotta be something in that area. Im out of warranty now but they said they will fix it as i brought it in with the prob while still under warranty. So i hope they actually honor that. Its never failed to start its just concerning. If i ever hear anything i will post it on here tho.

Not for me. im about to swap out my clutch some time soon and im gonna see if im missing a tooth in the flywheel, granted i have not heard mine make that noise in a while. I rarely get it tho. granted i dont drive the tacoma much right now.

Take it into the dealer and make sure they hear it and note it so you have it on record if you are still under warranty.

    is yours auto or manual?

I had a tech explain it to me as something to do with the engine firing and kicking back in a way. He couldn't say that was it for certain and he said if that was it then its a normal thing. Idk if its bullshit but he was the lead tech out in Avondale so hes no idiot. But i also had one say oh its the starter. If its just a faulty starter thats never gonna cause harm to the engine or anything like that. And its prob not that bad of a thing to replace. Its so weird tho. Samboski90, have you ever had it fail to start also? I have never had it not start.

Automatic and it always starts up if there was no clunk I wouldn't worry . Mainly something that stays in the back of my mind and drives me crazy. I'm going to see what my dealer has to say

Yeah ok well im glad its prob not a trans issue if its both manual and auto. In my mind its as if the starter motor is going along the flywheel and then like there is a missing tooth on the flywheel sometimes so it makes a loud clunk after it hits together a bit harder before re engaging. But i mean i doubt thats the case. Or something is up with the starter but who the hell knows. My truck is at 55K miles and it has only gotten less and less prominent and still no issues. So at least that is a good sign.

Does this ever happen on a cold start? Mine does it occasionally on a hot restart, like run into a store and come back out 2 minutes later. I’m agreeing with the description in post 26. The engine happens to stop in the perfect position on any cylinder, where it fires right up on the first compression stroke when you touch the key. The sound you hear is just the flywheel over-running the pinion gear on the starter. It happens sometimes, nothing to be concerned about.

I have had it happen on a cold start like after not driving it all night for sure. However I have not had it happen in a while. It mostly would happen on a hot start like when getting gas or after grabbing lunch or a run into a store like you said.

try cleaning your throttle body and MAF, jiggle the engine temp sensor or reseat it.
i have an older car that started like that on almost every cold start. a loose/resistive contact and a dirty maf throws off the fuel calculation making the start run lean. It always starts up on the first crank but with a rumble that makes you want to check the motor mounts.
cleaned those off and it went back to normal.
