On my sons 99 V6 4x4 he has started having some clutch issues that happen occasionally and seem to be happening more and more often. I have driven it but couldent get it to happen to me so this is what he said is going on.
When he pushes the clutch all the way down(like normal) he has trouble getting it into first or second gear, then when he lets off, the peddle will stick about halfway back up. He can pull the peddle up with his foot then it will work fine for a while.
So far,it has only happened in low gears, it has only happened comming out of first and going in to second and then trying to go back to first.
Im thinking maybe the throw out brg may be sticking... Any thoughts?

the clutch is controlled by hydraulics . Have you checked the master cylinder and slave cylinder for leaks ?
The adjustment rod for the clutch is under the dash and the over center spring has been known to break . Thats a common place for these critters to leak as well

The slave cylinder level is good. No leakage that I could find. There could be an issue with the adjustment rod, that would make since. I will check it out. Thanks for the tip

Do you mean the master cylinder level?
Check slave (under truck) for leakage, as well as spring.
If it is leaking, it could have air in system.

I always thought the master cylinder was for your brakes and the slave cylinder was the clutch? I could certainly be misinformed. Is this a system where there is just a reservour bolted to the fire wall and the actual cylinder that compresses the clutch is in the bell housing?
Forgive my ignorence, I know just enough to get me in trouble

The master cylinder is always the Master. In other words, the master tells the slave what to do. Master for brakes and clutch is on firewall.
Slaves are at each wheel and clutch.
The reservoir is near or on master(s).
Most vehicles with manual tranny have two reservoirs, but going from memory, the clutch master may get its fluid from the brake reservoir on your truck.

I had my master cylinder go out it was slowly letting brake fluid leak back. Itdied on me at a stop sign and i pumped tbe clutch petal and the starter roled me out in trafic luckily it started in time to gas it. get it fixed asap.

Check master cyl level. Clutch uses same fluid. If it got low, might have to bleed air like you would brakes.

I had an identical problem it got a lot worse as to be expected... It was my master cylinder.... Replaced it with a new one... Be careful if replacing some are cheaply built.

The master BRAKE cyl and the CLUTCH master cyl are two different systems.
It sounds as if there are TWO possibilities.
#1 and most likely--the clutch hydraulics- Master OR slave is weaing out. They do not last forever!!
If you decide or need to replace one or the other--REPLACE BOTH.
The opposite one will need replacing soon--just save yourself some time.
#2--there is something near the clutch pedal (wire, carpet,or something else) interfering with its operation.

FYI--it is MUCH easier to replace the clutch components before you get stuck on the side of the road.
    Pretty easy and not expensive.

A easy test. Push the clutch pedal in SLOWLY--if it does not disengage--you need to replace. If it is done QUICKLY and works better--it is likely worn out.
the rubber washers in both components wear out.
Is the fluid clear? Or black? Black indicates that the washer wear (black stuff) is in the fluid.

thanks guys for your replies. Unknowingly, I have done exactly what a few of you have recommended. I thought this thread was dead and haven't looked at it for a few days until I saw where you posted in my email. I ordered a quality new master and slave cylinder for it but it hasn't came in yet. With the age of the truck, even if it doesn't fix the problem, it wouldn't be a waste. But I think it will. I will post the results when it is done. probably this weekend.

You should go a head and replace the hose as well the rubber residue can build up inside

What hose are you refering to, All that I see is a steel line running from the master to the slave.

Only my opinion, but if the line looks good, don't mess with it.
Your truck is not a moon shot. There are no wear items in the line.
It either leaks, or doesn't leak. They are not known to be leakers.

do not believe your model has anything but the metal line.
Just drain the old fluid and replace w/new.
