I've got a 2006 V6 4x4 with the manual transmission, I've been getting a grinding noise around approximately 2000 rpm when driving (plus minus maybe 100 rpm on either side). Seems to happen regardless of gear I am in and on both up and down shifts. Has not effected drivability, clutch still grabs fine and the shifts are good. Truck only has approximately 181,000 km on it. I've watched a bunch of the videos here of some of the other noises, but it doesn't seem to match up with them.

I'm wondering if maybe it's a driveshaft issue. Has any one else had this problem?

Does it go into gear smoothly? When you go from say 2nd into 3rd, does it grind just before it accepts 3rd gear?

is the grinding noise consistent whether uphill vs downhill? Consistent regardless of what gear that you are in? Is there a power loss when the grinding begins?

I'd pull the belt off, check everything the belt touches. Spin the pulleys, pull, push, up, down, in, out, sideways. Check if there's any funkiness going on. If you're due for a new belt, get one first so you can accomplish 2 things at once. You could also try the stethoscope or wood dowel or screwdriver check. Trying to locate the noise source, if it does it while just reving the engine. Don't hurt yourself with moving parts.

Thanks guys! No grinding when it goes into gear, only happens when the clutch is engaged. Doesn’t do it in neutral, or with the clutch pedal down. Does it in all gears.

No difference up hill or down, and no noticeable power loss. Keeps on climbing up through the revs no problem.

New belt in spring of 2020. Only about 15,000 km on it since then, so hopefully should be fine, but I’ll check the belt anyway. It gets real cold where I live and it’s hard on belts in every piece of equipment. Plus the truck sits a lot when I’m in the field for work.

I’ll see if I can record the sound this weekend sometime.
    Cheers

I'd be checking prop shaft for sure, but it could be worn clutch dampening springs that are loose. You'll need to raise the truck up and test it somehow.

Nothing to do with the belt or pulleys then.

shift synchros? It does it in literally every gear? I have had shift synchronizers go out on other vehicles I have had. Typically pushed the clutch in, move gear into 3rd, and right before it received the gear it would grind for a split second.

Very delayed reply to this thread, but it was a loose bracket on the catalytic converter of all things. Must have been a strange harmonic at that RPM when moving. Weird...
