at lower speeds in 2wd, I hear and feel a rhythmic vibration. It sounds like a deep voice humming. The rhythm is similar to a heartbeat. This IS speed dependent. I’ll see if I can get an audio recording to post/link.

My rationale for believing it’s the transfer case: switch in to 4H and the noise disappears. I think it could be the chain inside making some sort of vibration when not engaged. I’m hoping a flush and fluid change will make a difference. I bought it used about 25K ago and I’m not sure the services have been done.

has anyone figured out how to bypass the stupid transfer case actuator function that won’t let it go into 4L without being level?

I’ve spent a while on here searching for these two issues and haven’t found anything yet. I’m probably not using the right search criteria.

This is likely the needle bearing on the drivers side. Its a very common issue all the way back to the 1st gens. When 4wd engages, it goes away. East Coast Gear and Supply sells a replacement needle bearing that fixes the issue. If you search on here, you'll find many posts about it along with a how-to on fixing it.

Not your transfer case, it's what everybody else is saying.

I don't believe there's a 'level' lockout on 4LO but some people find it finicky. Trying to get the shift when you're already wadded up isn't going to help the situation.

Okay, sounds like this is very common and everyone agrees. Even YouTube agrees. Looks like I’ll be renting some tools for this job!

I can’t get this done before my 800mile trip next weekend. This has been going on for a while and mine isn’t as bad as a lot of guys describe. Am I going to do excessive damage to the CV shaft to replace it after the trip?

You’re fine to wait until after the trip.
