So, I noticed oil drops on my garage floor. Upon further investigation, I see oil splattered inside, on the radiator hoses, a bit on the battery, under the oil filter holder, and enough that it dripped down the frame and onto the floor. The oil filter was on tight, no leaks there.

I checked the engine oil, no significant loss of oil. The coolant looks okay. No temperature increases.

I changed the oil and degreased the area. Two days later, no signs of oil leaking.

The oil seemed to come from somewhere under the oil filter holder. Still, no further wet oil to be found.

The pictures show the general area where the offending oil was splattered.

Anyone have any ideas what this could have been?

For reference. 2011 DC Shortbed. TRD Offroad. V6 Auto. 55k miles.

Do you still have the rubber cap on the nipple under the oil cooler? Maybe it fell off and the oil in the bottom came out and got tossed around by your belt?

I never knew there was a filter holder drain. I do my own oil changes and have never drained that cap. I checked and it's still there. No new oil has yet appeared after 4 days of driving either.

Could it be that oil accumulates and spurts out when filled or something like that? This is the first time I've ever had this oil splatter though after 55k miles.

dont worry,if the oil had a way out it would come out all the time ,not just once and a while.

i bet you had a little around the oil filter and the wind from driving blew it around like in the pics

But it was enough oil to drip all over the frame and onto the floor. That's what I'm worried about. It was more than just the oil that may have been in the oil filter holder, more than just a spray. This is just strange to happen, kinda all of a sudden. Also, not right after the previous oil change, but after about 4700 miles.

I should've taken before pics too. Oh well

There is a decent amount of oil that comes out when you break the seal on the oil filter. Slightly less than 1/8 of a quart flows into the oil catch.

I ran a drain line down into the drivers wheel well. Makes oil changes a little easier.
