Mine does the same and I'm meticulous with all maintenance. I do an occasional techron treatment and have tried some 89 octane. I try to stick with Chevron gas. Seems to be better.

I did change the oil yesterdayybut I only use the OEM filters which I buy in bulk. Using the same oil, Pennzoil 5w-30 high milage.

I was thinking of running some seafoam through the gas.

Best way to use Seafoam is to run one can through the gas, and use another can (the spray can kind) through the throttle body. It does a much better job of cleaning when done through the TB, the gas tank is more just for the fuel system. But doing both is the best of both worlds.

I'd recommend the seafoam in the throttle body. Didn't seem to do anything when I put it in the gas tank. Techron is a better option for the gas tank imo.

Now when you guys say throttle body, how are you going about doing so? I've only ever done it in my previous cars via the brake vacuum hose.

Seafoam makes an aerosol version now, that way you can spray it directly into the throttle body.

Don't want to do it via the brake hose, at least not on Tacomas...I read somewhere on here that it only feeds into a few cylinders or something like that when you do it that way. Through the throttle body is best, the can that is posted above is the one you want. It has a special straw on it that hooks on the throttle body intake tube and sprays right past the butterfly valve while the RPM's are held steady at ~1.5k. It's easy to do, there are instructions on the can that are easy to follow.

Not sure which 2nd gens use an electric vacuum pump for the brakes, but my 2010 does and there isn't a vacuum hose from the intake anyhow.

I'm pretty sure there's a post with which hose to use if you don't want to spray it directly into the throttle body, I'll see if I can find it.

yeah I'm not too sure how different it is for you guys versus my 1st gen, but doing it via the throttle body insures that it's doing what it was intended to do..and the aerosol can version of Seafoam is much safer to use via the TB than the older liquid cans that you had to pour....pour it too fast and your engine is toast. The aerosol can sprays slowly and in a fine enough mist that you don't have to worry about seizing the motor.

One thing to watch out for though is that you have to make sure your RPMs are at about 2k, if they're too low then the butterfly valve doesn't open up enough for the Seafoam to get through it and it all runs back out through you air intake and ruins your aEm Pro Dry filter....ask me how I know, lol

Toast? Back in automotive school they actually taught us to use the liquid on the vacuum line and near the end to flood and kill it. Then we let it set for 30 minutes, then crank it up. Does this really break stuff? I've done it to 3 vehicles without any issues :poking:

There was a guy on the Yotatech forums a few years back that started this huge thread about how he hydrolocked his motor using Seafoam...I've been terrified of that happening ever since. I'm sure it's not common but I remember even on those liquid pour cans they had a warning saying to take it to a mechanic to have them do it via the throttle body or vacuum line, presumably for that reason I figured.

Anyhow with the aerosol can it's a non-issue really

I think he's getting at potentially hydrolocking the engine while doing it, you're not just supposed to shove the vacuum line in the can and wait for it to drain it. You want to always keep a decent mixture of air and seafoam going into the vacuum line, it also helps the seafoam atomize better.

That is crazy, see they taught us that you basically wanted a lot of the liquid to hangout onto of each cylinder for a while to eat the carbon up. Now I am afraid to try it... lol

As in, the last bit of seafoam you would dump in to stall out the engine, then let her set a while. After 30 minutes and a long crank they would fire up and pump out insane amounts of crap for a while, then we were taught to floor it a few times up and down the road to clear it out.

I'd have to imagine he damn near poured the whole can into the line then started it, I think you'd be pretty hard pressed to actually hydrolock an engine with Seafoam. That said, I still put my finger over the lid a little bit and let the vacuum of the engine draw the liquid out slowly.

I just stick with the aerosol can now lol. Easy to use and pretty much worry free

Like I said, just don't pour it straight in. Just keep a little air and liquid going.

Ok so aerosol, but back to the original issue... Does anyone think this will help the pinging? I am going to experiment on my way home from work today to see if she still does it.
