Ok so I was stopped at a red light, when suddenly my truck started revving up on its own. It jumped from its normal idle to around 2000rpm and then dropped back to normal it's did this 3 times before the light changed. Any ideas or similar situation.

Normal....could be a number of things... A/C kicking on and off, injector cleaning cycle, etc. It also makes a tapping/knocking noise, as some describe it, when idling at times. This is a noisy motor (at times).

How many miles on your vehicle??
And no. I can't recall that happening to me while stopped with my foot on the brake at a light.
Also, I would not consider a 2k rev jump while stopped at a light in drive, a normal occurrence unless there was an accidental tap on the throttle.

I recommend a visit to your dealer.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

I've noticed lol. The day I got mine I made them start just about every tacoma on the lot cause of the "sewing machine noise" just didn't sound healthy

At 10k, you should be running smooth, I would get it checked

    Good luck

2000 RPM is a bit of a stretch to be normal. That is a really high idle for this truck. 1-1.2k max for idle with A/C compressor cycling.

Good luck reproducing it for the dealer though....you're better off trying to capture it on video so you have proof before getting the 3 hr "could not duplicate" treatment.

Is your AC on during this? More than likely it's just the AC kicking in. It's a common thing, and no cause for concern.

EDIT: Nevermind. Reread OP and noticed the RPMs were increasing, and not decreasing.

Mine has not/does not do this. I'd definitely call the dealer. If your dealer as anything like mine, good luck getting them to duplicate it and even if they can, good luck getting an actual answer other then..."ohh, that's within the normal operating parameters of the vehicle". I'm pretty sure I could bring my truck to my dealer with it shooting flames and missing the intake and they would say its normal, or tell me its because I sat in traffic for more then 27 minutes and its not covered under warranty.

I would give the dealer a chance to check it out and see what they say first.

    Hope that helps

I've seen this on my 1st gen. Problem was the side of my foot hitting the go pedal while braking. Doh.

OP here’s a though or something I would try if it was me.
I would ask the service rep if they have an experienced tech recently factory trained in engine performance, and if they have a lab scope he will have access to in trouble shooting the issue, they should.
If they say they can’t that’s something I would discuss with Toyota corp, or/and I would then tell them I’ll call them back and try another dealer.
Next to experience, a lab scope is the best way I know of identifying an intermittent issue.

    Hope that helps
    Cheers!

I find it helpful, at least we know it's not just on the '16 but could be in the ecm, or some type of rare fuel system glitch, so again, an experience engine performance tech would be my best friend here.

    Cheers!

The Surge is from the demand of the Power Steering Pump. At idle lean on the the Steering Wheel and straighten back out you will notice the Surge.
