So I just bought my 05 Single Cab Tacoma 2.4L, now when my truck is in neutral (manual transmission), it makes a noise. The noise sounds like something is lose or some type of metal is hitting. Now when I put the clutch in, the noise goes away. Can you guys maybe help figure out what that noise can be? :help:

    It's a fairly common problem.
There's really only 3 things that can make noise. Clutch (normally squeaks REALLY loud), throwout bearing, and pilot bearing. Very rarely is it the pilot bearing that makes a noise loud enough to be audible.

If you can deal with the sound, just run it. Otherwise it's drop the transmission and replace.

If you do drop the transmission to replace it, you may as well replace the pilot bearing as well. It's cheap. Of course inspect the clutch and flywheel as well. It's basically an all day event for such a little part.

Just a suggestion, but PM Jorge at Camelback Toyota. He's a vendor on here and can get you factory Toyota parts for a hell of a lot less than local dealers, sometimes even less than aftermarket Chinese crap parts from parts houses.

Uh, Jorge at Camelback is gone.

Op, there is a clutch TSB for racket in neutral. It is T-SB-0103-11 issued August 19, 2011, and covers all 5 speeds from 2005-2011. Apparently the buffering springs in the clutch disk get loose. The procedure involves replacing the clutch disk and also inspecting the pressure plate and replacing it too if it is not stamped "Aisin" on the outer edge.

 I forgot about that, thanks.

Still get great prices if you want to hunt for the part here:

09 Tacoma 6 speed was making a chirping or squeaking noise at idle which stopped after depressing the clutch pedal. It was diagnosed as the throw out bearing. Ilet the dealership know that I'd researched the issue online and that it seemedto be a chronic problem with these vehicles. Without mentioning this, I'm notconvinced the dealership would have looked into any further. Before the dealerresearched the TSB, they said the warranty department would not cover the throwout bearing because it's looked at as wear and tear after about 10k (plus orminus) miles. After finding the TSB, the warranty department covered it. I wasglad to hear that the $1300 estimate (entire clutch kit replacement includingclutch plate resurface) got reduced to a $50 deductible!! A member reported onanother thread that his warranty was up, but the dealership cut the labor inhalf since there was a TSB out for the issue. They replaced the slave cylinderwith one that is sized differently than the original part, the throw outbearing, and maybe one or two other items.
Here's a thread to read concerning manual transmissions that also covers the throw out bearing issue:
