    Hey, Folks.

I have a 120cf scuba tank (49lb full) that I use for airing up and such. I normally carry it in the back of the AC, but it would be great if I could strap it into the bed. I have six D rings on the bed bolts, bed stiffeners, the third accessory rail, a closed cell foam cradle for the tank, many straps, and a roll up tonneau.

For the life of me I can't figure a good method. If only we had another tie down point near the wheel well, it would be a piece of cake.

This needs to be good enough for offroad. Any help? Thanks!

    Have a good one,

    tony

Run a 2 x 4 between the sides. Put d rings on the 2 x 4? Something you could take in or out?

Research e-track tie down rail and straps. I used to use if for straping large co2 bottles down, in the upright position.

Edit: you could add that directly on the wheel well.

Wait. Is a scuba tank heavier full than empty? I mean, it's just air, right?

You have a lot of options if you don't mind drilling some holes in your bed.

Run a strap from front d ring to rear d ring on both sides and tighten. Then use those straps to hook two other straps to secure your tanks. They won't go anywhere.
Or, just run tri mix and let them float under your bed cover lol.

What’s heavier, a pound of bricks or a pound of feathers?

I carry around argon welding tanks by just duct taping 2 furring strips or grade stakes to them. A pair of wheel chocks work well too.

    Seriously?

Anyways, stand the tank up against the backwall, do not lie it down and go off roading. Your best bet is to get a piece of rubber put it beneath the tank. Take the tie down cleats and put it to either side and butt it up tight against the tank. Find a ratchet strap, not one of those NSR strap with the buckle you cinch down, get a proper rathcet strap and cinch the sucker up tight against the rail.

I use to carry 14 -15 tanks this way in my tundra when we were going out on diving trips. Sadly being in northern Alberta these days has me seriously lacking on the diving front.

    OK so...

1 cubic foot of air at standard temperature and pressure assuming average compositionweighs approximately 0.0807 lbs.

So under pressure the weight increases for a constant volume. I get it I think.

About six lbs difference between a full and empty tank, depending on pressure.

Which would you rather have thrown at you? A pound of bricks or a pound of feathers? I’ll bet you say the pound of bricks is heavier.

    Thanks, Folks.

Lemme dig into the ideas. I'd like to keep it on its side due to the tonneau.

Yeah. No cam straps here. HD ratchet straps.

    :rofl::rofl::rofl:

Well, you KNOW where I am coming from. o_O

I think(?) it is more than that? I just got it filled and weighed it at 49.0lb just because I finally remembered to do it. 3,500psi service limit galvanized steel. It feels light empty, but definitely not like a feather light AL tank. Estimating 80% to 100% heavier? 20lbs of air?

This was actually a thing when filming Ghostbusters. They wanted to drop 75lb of shaving cream from a pretty big height. The actor smartly asked for a demo before doing the scene, or something like that.
