Thanks! It feels like much more than that.

It's a great tank for airing up, shop air, seating beads, and such.

Thanks! This may be my first try, esp as I don't want to drill. Those, with a quick fist might do it?

I'd love to have e-track or even aircraft seat track crowns and Ancra fittings. Both are pretty inexpensive, but to do it right, I'd have to drill many holes. I want to avoid that for now.

Yeah. Drilling would be pretty easy. The thought of one or two more D rings is very tempting, but . . .

That is a great idea. That would work nicely with the foam cradles. I might combine this with the 2x4 / 2x6 idea.

I'd go there for driving around the city, but not for off road. I do generally have the first stage regulator on there for quick use.

Currently, I just plop it on the rear floor with a carpet remnant protecting the center consoles. It works well, but I would just like to get it out of cab.

I'm focused at the moment on laying down. Standing would be easy, like you said, but I'd just keep it in the cab versus standing?

    Great ideas. Thanks!

Thanks! I think that route I am going to try with some lumber and straps as a first go.

That is a great price. A 2x4 or 2x6 would go well with some straps.

    Good back up idea. Thanks.

I'd have to look at it more, but I strongly believe you can do something with the 3rd rail and the front floor frame bolt. Especially since the LB has the extra nook in front of the wheel well. The initial item could be wood, with later fab in metal. I think if you use those two locations, you should be secure (maybe even add the side rail). Make a small storage cube above the tank cradle to hold your accessory stuffs (use the vertical space under the tonneau).

Thanks! My bottle it too tall to stand up under the tonneau and I don't trust hanging it sideways off the rails for offroad, which is mainly when it is along with me.

I do have D rings on all the bed bolts. I'm thinking of connecting a piece of lumber to two or three of the D rings, using the Quick Fists, and ratchet straps. With that, I just need to see if it will bounce up and down.

I thought about rigging something without drilling for the top of the wheel well, but there are sliding issues there.

We wont talk about how unsafely I do it when hauling a tank in personal vehicles.

When flying cylinders on aircraft, I always build a cradle.
Stout plywood base large enough to attach to floor fittings or bolts or strap down or whatever. 2x6 cradles to hold the cylinder, 2x6 or bigger each end to protect the valves. Strap cylinder to the 2x6s. One 2x6 with smaller notch to prevent valves hitting the end.20181116_113146.jpg

Sorry no good pics on me.
However those are some really nice commercial mounts that people posted...

    Ah! I get it now.

That is some killer MS Paint skillz. Not crappy at all.

    That could work. Thanks!

Haha! Plenty of that fun when engineering tank installations for approval.

Something like that might be my first shot, esp with those inexpensive Quick Fists.

I forgot to check the cylinder diameter this morning, or I would have ordered some.

I looked at the bed at lunch... You have the tie-down loop right there and that frame-bolt is a lot closer to that corner than you'd think. It would likely be right in the middle of your cradle. I think it should be pretty easy to fab a working setup.

Yes. It is in a nice spot for that. Making smoothing to grab the ring should be a piece of cake.

    Thanks!

For safety purposes, under most DOT regs, compressed gas bottles are supposed to be carried vertically when transported. I believe scuba tanks are exempt when transporting to or from a dive site, but if you are not using it for scuba, you might run afoul of a curious trooper with DOT training if you are carrying a full tank mounted horizontally. Besides which, you don't want to be the one launching your tank sideways into traffic if you get in an accident.

What is the diameter of your tank?

I would suggest two thin aluminum bars connected to your side rail with an M8 bolt and T-nut.

Drop the bars down vertically and use the large Quick Fist to hold the tank vertically. If you have a rail across the back of the bed even better. I will send you pics of my setup.

Remember, inertia is your enemy. As long as the tank does not build momentum relative to your truck bed it should stay secure.

This is what I found from the CFR:

    (1) Cylinders. Cylinders containing Class 2 gases must be securely restrained in an upright or horizontal position, loaded in racks, or packed in boxes or crates to prevent the cylinders from being shifted, overturned or ejected from the motor vehicle under normal transportation conditions.

    and

    (b) Portable tank containers containing Class 2 (gases) materials shall be loaded on motor vehicles only as follows:

    (1) Onto a flat floor or platform of a motor vehicle.

    (2) Onto a suitable frame of a motor vehicle.

    (3) In either such case, such containers shall be safely and securely blocked or held down to prevent shifting relative to each other or to the supporting structure when in transit, particularly during sudden starts and stops and changes of direction of the vehicle.

    (4) Requirements of paragraphs (1) and (2) of this paragraph (b) shall not be construed as prohibiting stacking of containers provided the provisions of paragraph (3) of this paragraph (b) are fully complied with.

Great discussion, in concert with what @NoOne posted below.

This is part of the reason that I want it in back, although being out of sight is also a worry which is why I'm looking for ideas. I didn't like what I was seeing with just a single strap in my driveway.

I need to check the diameter. I believe it is 8in or less.

I really like that idea and have everything but the quick fists. In regard to your inertia / momentum statement, the problem is that I don't like the unrestrained bottom side for off road. I've had my truck swaying side to side in rhythmic ruts that caused the TCS to fire. If it was on road only, I'd be all over that.

If I do decide to drill, I would go this route using a shim and through bolts on the bottom side.

I am bouncing around the idea of getting a scuba cert. In that case, I wouldn't mind drilling.

Great info. I spend a lot of time there, mainly in the Part 20s.

I always thought this stuff didn't apply to a scuba tank in my bed because there is no "commerce" involved....??

I do know that taking my 100lb propane tank to be filled in my truck bed is a big no-no....

Kinda, sorta... you don't have to run placards, etc. But you do have to follow general safety guidelines. Note, the restrictions are pretty simple... it can't be rolling around. These are also just the guidelines for passenger vehicles. Different stuff for mixes and other gasses and other vehicles.
