So, my truck will be forced to spend some time on the street by the beach in southern California for a few months. I'd like to hear your opinion on what precautions I should take or if you think this idea is ludicrous. The truck only has liability insurance and is pretty heavily modified for camping/off road use. If you have any recommendations regarding mechanical theft deterrents, alarm systems, personal bad/good experience... I would love to hear it. Thanks!

Really depends on the area but most beach communities bring in a lot of outsiders/tourists especially this time of year. If you have a lot of overland stuff on it, I would try and remove it and leave it at home or indoors somewhere if it were me.

It should, typically aftermarket parts/accessories are covered if you pay for the coverage as long as it's not something you normally take with you when you leave the vehicle (like, say your laptop).

My main concern with just liability though when parking on the street (esp in a sketchy area), if your entire truck gets jacked then you are SOL

I sorta get it if someone has a beater car, like say a $1k 1996 Honda Civic with 400k miles on it that you use just to get to/from work. But a Tacoma outfitted with gear and aftermarket parts....definitely get full coverage.

Leave your equipment to a minimum on the truck if its outside. This is regardless of the area.

I had a car (before my Tacoma) that got side swiped parked on the street in the middle of the day. Was in Beverly Hills when I had a teaching gig out there. Some lady in a BMW was blind drunk during the day and swiped mine and 2 other cars on the street. She drove off but her husband came back was waiting by my car when I saw it lol. He was some hotshot movie producer or something and ended up paying for all the damage out of pocket.

You'd be surprised how much full coverage will cover. They usually even cover damage taken while on the trails. As long as you are on a legal trail and not involved in a race or sponsored event, you are usually covered with full coverage. Obviously you have to pay the deducible of course. But say you roll the truck while off-roading, you might be happy you got that full coverage option. Save your receipts of the aftermarket stuff too, can't hurt your case.

So it may not be related at all, but i've had a few vehicles broken into and things taken out of them and both times my renters insurance covered the missing items because the vehicle was parked, one time not at my house. Not sure if it works the same with aftermarket accessories, but maybe worth checking? Essentially, personal belongings are being taken.

I had a truck stolen once. What a nightmare. This is when you find out how good your insurance really is.

When its there turn to write the check.

Wow...$84 per year vs being SOL if someone steals your truck or decides to liberate some parts from it. Seems like a no brainer to me. :notsure:

In for when someone pisses down your snorkel. Don’t leave shit in your bed. Rent a small storage unit to keep your stuff in that has 24-7 access. Full coverage insurance is a must. Most crime like that is crime of opportunity just try to limit their opportunity

Yes, homeowners and renters insurance generally does. But the deductibles are so high it's not worth filing a claim, usually.

My jeep was broken into some years back and a few things taken. Not enough to satisfy the deductible. But my insurance had a no deductible on broken glass so they replaced the wind wing gratis.

I live in PB. If you're leaving your truck for extended periods of time you also have to watch out for street sweeping. But ya, as soon as your truck starts to look like it hasn't moved in any capacity for a while... it's gonna be free pick-ins. Luckily, I live in north PB and feel like my street is pretty safe (not a through street up by Kate Sessions park). I have driveway parking though but a lot of people park on the street.
