Well here it is: 2020 Toyota Tacoma, TRD Offroad Premium in Cement Grey (Double Cab Short Box / DCSB). Had 14km on the ODO when I test drove it (I ran it up to 24km), and still had the same ODO reading when I took delivery.

I was originally looking for a Quicksand TRD Off-road on a casual basis, then at the last minute I found out that the color was discontinued for 2021, and that the finance rate was 1.99% for 2020. So I could leave my bank accounts alone and take a loan for a used 2018/2019 at a higher interest rate, or get a new 2020 at a low rate. Finding a brand new one was more appealing, so I scoured all of Canada for one. The last available double cab Quicksand TRD Off Road was in Calgary pending financing approval for about a week, and ended up selling. So now that the last truck was gone, I convinced myself to take my color blinders off (hah!) and said other than quicksand, what would I be happy with? Looking at photos of ‘what could be’, I decided Cement Grey / black / orange accents here and there would look pretty damn good. (Most of my camping stuff is generally grey and orange apparently). The Toyota E-commerce sales manager I was talking to about finding a quicksand taco called me about a week later and said “hey, we just got a truck matching your criteria, but in your second color option. I know you’ve been looking for a while, so you’re sort of first in line if you are interested. We ended up agreeing on a price, did up the paperwork, and drove it home on September 26.

I’ve never been drawn to trucks much, but with all the outdoor activities we like to do and the hope of doing them more frequently, the appeal of owning a mid-size truck grew (Along with having an SUV for my wife). Seeing photos and YouTube content from guys like Last Line of Defence, Taco Twonz, Rob Daman, Tacoma Beast, Maxx Powell, YotaMafia, RobMotive, and others really opened a new door. I regularly check out Overlanding channels and it’s really contagious – makes your mouth water to get out far from civilization.

The newest model year vehicle I have ever owned prior to this is a 2007 Subaru WRX STI, so I was a bit overwhelmed with having all the new tech at my fingertips at first. About 8 years ago, I was into offroading dirty old Jeep XJs – take them out all over the place, but frequent Redwater and Bruderheim night runs (~10pm to 4am), then work the following day. Those days tapered to a bit of a close over time, sold the Jeep, got into Subaru.

We have two Husky girls (4-month-old Maple and 2-year-old Marshmallow) that go everywhere with us, so I plan on getting us out on some more camping trips to continue to optimize our gear setup(s), before eventually making longer and longer trips more of an overland and/or road trip effort. One major goal (pending global condition with COVID screwing everything up) is to make a road trip south of the border into Colorado to get some parts in person. Sounds like a great excuse to make a sweet road trip out of the shopping endeavour. Making our way to northern Canada, and even just exploring the area we live is something I would like to do more of. “All-inclusive resorts”, “Cruises”, “Euro-trips” and similar vacations really aren’t up our alley. Of course, there are some places I would like to visit and check out, but generally we love to drive with our pooches and have fun exploring. Hunting too, but that’s more of a solo / with friends activity.

Accessories - The block heater / block heater bumper plug in sounds like its standard most places in Canada I assume. Other than that, the PDF below shows the factory options for the packages:

Sheet 11 in the PDF link below - TRD Offroad with TRD Sport Premium features listed here. Not too sure why the Canada brochure doesn't have a TRD Offroad Premium category...

Got the dog gear all set up!
Some Marathon Seat Covers in Kryptek Typhon to protect the leather plus all the doggo accessories.
I really do like the quality of the seat covers, but they can be a real PITA to get on properly.

Probably going to remove the Meso steering wheel overlay and paint it, might also remove the airbag cover to paint the original chrome logo. That big cement grey logo doesn't quite look right to my eye.

Oh, also ran a USB from the back of the head unit, along the center console, and plugged in a Type C for my phone. No more dangling USB out of the dash for infotainment use.

That parts list must have taken some serious time! Nice truck and nice read on this post. Would be interested to see updated exterior pics!

    Thanks!
Lots of work in progress; need to pull the wheels for now and revert to stock until I order the C4 bumper. My intent was to keep the bumper in a single piece to sell and didnt want to cut any part of it. I knew I would have to some sculpting on the firewall side (pinch welds, fender liner, etc.). Been working on this since Friday to get ready to go camping... We'll get there, I'm sure!

I was short when ordering metri-pack connector plugs and male terminals, so I just removed the ditch lights to come back to building the harnesses later. Once those are buttoned up, I'll get some pics of the fuse/relay panel. It's fucking dandy.
