Stressed out! Will my frame be okay after undercoat?

I recently bought a 2010 Tacoma from carmax. I noticed the rust on the frame and inquired about it but was told that it was surface and it would be fine. It's been over two weeks since I've purchased the vehicle and I recently got it checked and was told that the issue is a little more serious.

I am getting it taken care of at a body shop that will clean up the rust and then apply rust preventative and an undercoat. I'm wondering if after doing this, will my rust woes be over?

I live in the Mid-Atlantic and do moderate driving. Nothing too serious and not an extreme amount of snow or salt.

This issue has been causing me a lot of stress as I can't return the vehicle. Please help. The body shop that is doing this is very reputable and recommended.

Holy Fuck I would have that looked at and inspected by Toyota. And if the frame needs to be replaced I would be looking for a FULL REFUND. And why can't you return the vehicle?

I'm past the 5 day return period at CarMax. And this vehicle does not fall into the Toyota frame recall. It has not rusted through in any spots. All is surface and nothing is falling apart.

That's a lot of rust for a 2010. I would get rid of it ASAP. So that truck is almost 6 years old and it looks that bad? These trucks might not even be 10 year keepers. Geez

Yea they remove the rust first, put on a rust preventative, then undercoat it.

Sadly I can't sell it. I'd lose out on too much money.

My bets are on this rust preventative service and undercoating. will this help significantly??

Surface rust is surface rust. But rust that has started to be a Cancer is a tough fix. Especially like stated above if you go to fix anything.

One can never have too many light bars.
You could always throw a fit in Car max saying that you were assured by the salesperson that it's not serious when in fact it was. Car Max cars come with a 60 day limited warranty so I would start with that.

    Have it checked out......

But should be fine just keep up with it every summer....

I live it the mid-west and we use lots of salt....

I wire wheel the rust and paint a few times over the summer and every fall...

This year I also sprayed the frame with fluid film........ I have a 2010 and it looks great, but you have to keep touching it up....

I called and made big deal with the sales manager there. He said the Tacoma met "carmax standards", as in there is no penetrating rust. He offered to have me come over and put it on a lift and have their guys look at it. I did NOT do that, because I knew they'd just say it's fine.

I've looked over the limited warranty and it wouldn't cover these rust issues as it isn't causing any problems as of now.

I don't know what state agencies you have that are there for you but in CA we have the "Department of Consumer Affairs" If you have something similar in your area I would look there to see what your options are.

Get some media involved and blow it up to monumental proportions. A big car sales place like that hates bad publicity and will likely do whatever it takes to correct it. Always an option..

Put a big plywood sign in the back and keep driving around the place. This place sold me a rust bucket and won't warranty the issue.

In short, what you should try to do is bully them into doing what they should do anyway, not actually go to court. Not that you won't go to trial if need be. If you have truly been wronged, then in situations like this, and I have been in several, none of my own making, my experience has been that the best course of action is to become the aggressor. Investigate your adversary for any character flaws/weaknesses you can use against him, and investigate any lawsuits that have been filed against him. Lawsuits are public record at the courthouse. Speak with as many people that have sued him as possible. They'll be happy to talk to you. It's amazing what you will learn. If you have truly been wronged you can bet he's been sued before, probably multiple times. You may even discover a lawyer willing to sue them for free, they hate them that much. Hire a lawyer and file suit. Probably cost you $2,500.00 to $5,000.00 for a retainer fee. Expect to get little, if any, of this money back. After that, have your lawyer set up several appointments for depositions. Before, and in between deposition appointments, have your lawyer subpoena any and all pertinent documents. Time for you to lawyer up! The man that throws the first good punch usually wins the fight. If you are like most men, you won't allow yourself to be pushed around, and you won't allow yourself to be stolen from. Good luck.
