I have changed out sets of wheels on track cars with impacts, definitely have to get the lug nut started before you use an impact. If I were a betting man, this was the first lug nut that the tech put on the wheel. Looks like the wheel was hung and wasn't flush with the hub before the tech zipped it on with an air tool.

It is possible that the tech that found it, found it. Someone has to and with this type of mistake, it is easy to blame the guy that found it. It is also possible that the guy that did it had no idea. I have seen people run a lug nut on and even torque it without knowing their mistake. It is a very cheap fix and not worth getting your customer mad or inconveniencing them. You want to make a customer happy? Say "someone cross threaded your lug nut, not sure who it was, but I fixed it for you, no charge." You will probably have a customer for life.

SO magically we are supposed to believe that this is a factory defect that just happen to fall off at the first service? And if that is all true, why would they be bothering you about it? It's either a factory defect or warranty. Either way fix it and leave me alone service writer guy.

Good point. Seems to me that if it was a factory defect that it should be covered by warranty.

Try a face to face first. Document everything. Keep the lug nut, use it for show & tell. Keep all pictures and emails.

If still blocked, go to another dealer. Keep the removed parts, keep pressing Toyota Corp for corrective actions against the original dealer.

I'm reasonably sure Toyota Corp does not want shiest-er dealers in the network.

Exactly this. This is such a simple quick fix that costs almost nothing. You should have never even had to know about this other than after it was done a "hey, your lug was stripped so we fixed it". It doesn't have to be a blame game...who cares if it's the lacky tech or came from the assembly line like that. A good dealer would just do it.

I actually stripped some of my own lugs when I first got my truck. I had the tire shop mount and balance my tires but not put them on my truck (lift wasn't on yet), so I took the lug nuts home, got the lift on, started the lugs by hand, couple turns like I always do then hit them with the impact to snug them all up. Well, the tire shop gave me 1.25 pitch nuts instead of the 1.5 pitch I needed and 1.25 will thread on a fair amount. I replaced the couple lugs I stripped in ~10 minutes, took the nuts back to the tire shop. The guy rolled his eyes, gave me what I needed and asked if I needed lugs replaced. It's such a simple thing on these trucks to replace them.

I would skip the dance with the first dealer and just pay the cost to get it fixed somewhere else (another dealer or tire/brake shop) or DIY. Tell them the situation, and that this dealer has lost your business. They may comp the fix just to earn you as a customer.

Trying to take this through corporate is also a test of your willingness to to all of the legwork for little reward. You'll spend hours on the phone documenting things and moving it up the ladder. It's just not that worth it.

Then leave some scathing reviews of the first dealer and call it a day.

So i called toyota corporate again and explained to the woman the issue she again said she was looking into it so now they are supposed to have a senior representative call me as i voiced my concerns and what i think happened and that i emailed the dealership owner and have not heard from them either. She said that i should gotten a email from them but ive been looking in every folder possible and no emails so sounds like im being dragged through the mud I can’t believe how something this small turns out to be so big but yeah definitely not returning to this dealership for anything and I can’t tell you guys how many people ive sent there for sales oh well their loss and it’s funny i live on a small island and for decades there has always been a saying to buy off island and this dealership just proved it’s no better

Keep calling and tell them you'll keep calling. The truck wasn't returned to you in the condition it was brought in.

I would have told him I don't own a impact gun, and if a guy can do that with a 4way wrench you probably don't want to argue with that person.

This is just fucking embarrassing anyway you slice it.

I would be real vocal with someone about how much of my time they are wasting over $10 in parts.

This. Shameful. I've been a mechanic for 25 years. There is no way I would treat a customer like that, and trust me, I'm used to being blamed for the wipers not working after I changed a turn signal bulb.

Good move to a different shop.

When the work is complete, ask for the return of the parts.

Then follow up with the original shop, just stop in, hand the parts to the Service Writer, then walk out. They can evaluate to their hearts content and you can confirm why your patronage has been lost.

Be a polite a thorn in their side.
