Stripped M8x1.0 bolts on TRD wheels - ideas??

    Cross posting from the TX Baja thread for more visibility. Any ideas would be appreciated. Im supposed to get these mounted tomorrow morning..

    I'm in the final stages of getting my wheels back together after powder coating.

    Thanks to Maine's unhealthy obsession with using as much calcium chloride and road salt as possible, the surface between the rings and wheels was pretty rough. As are all the M8 threaded bolt holes. I'm sure you can see where this is going...

    So far I've stripped out 3 of those bolts, hardly past finger tight. Several more are close and will definitely strip out before they reach a decent torque

    Any thoughts on how I repair this cluster? I'm wondering if I can put some rtv in the hole, then thread the bolt in, let it set and snug it up. Not sure if I can helicoil these due to how close they are to the bead. Not even sure if they make helicoils in M8x1.0

    Maybe a jb weld or metal epoxy? The play doh type. Fill the hole then try to drill and tap????

    Thats not a bad idea if I could get it to stick. Even after blasting theres still some corrosion in there. Its hard to see in the pics above

    There are several different companies that make thread inserts for M8x1.0 in different lengths. Probably should get some of those on order

    I ordered a helicoil kit today, should be good to go once they get here. Might even just run duct tape to keep the loose bolts in while balancing tomorrow :D

    If it’s decorative, jb weld. If it’s a true bead lock, a good thread repair insert like timesert.

    These are technically decorative, but do bear a bit of force every once in a while :D

    JB Weld and re-tap would be the easiest.
    Since the fastener is basically decorative, IMO, I wouldn't was the effort to heli-coil. The other bolts should be able to manage fastening. Since it is a steel fastener to alloy wheel, there is always opportunity to strip more, so limit on/off with final torquing.
    If you heli-coil, you will be removing material from the lip of the wheel so be careful not to over sink the boring drill. You will have to go deeper to account for the drill tip lead in angle. (Or plan for less thread engagement).
    Drilling on the lip of a wheel is risky. Since tires are mounted, deflate prior to repair, be safe about it.
    Theoretically, balancing should be done after repair, although 1/4 oz shouldn't make a difference.

    Another option would be cut-off the head of the Allen bolt and Jb weld it to the ring, definitely not a true fix, but would be the easiest. After mounting you, would be the only one that knows.

    I would drill and tap to the next size up, be it metric or English (M8x1.0 = 7.974mm major diameter, M9x1.0 =8.974mm, 3/8-16 = 9.5mm), and put in some threaded brass with black Loctite - then D&T the brass back to M8x1.0.

    Have you tried a thread chasing tap at all?

    Though if the corrosion has eaten the material away that will not help.

    RTV might twist out faster then the corroded holes.

    I think the simple fix would be an epoxy that will bond to the wheel and is easy to tap.

    So many different epoxy blends now the perfect one should be easy to find.

    Thread inserts I think Would be a royal pain if you need to do 4 Wheels

    Thanks for the suggestions.

    Yes I ran a bottoming tap through all 48 holes (by hand) before beginning reassembly. I think it actually made things worse, to be honest. The tap certainly disturbed whatever soft corroded metal was there

    I only have two that are completely striped out. Seven others feel very soft and I did not fully torque them, but technically those 7 are holding themselves. Plan to helicoil those two asap and monitor the other seven (at this point I dont want to disturb anything more than I have to).

    Everyone keeps mentioning filling with epoxy / JB weld. I like that idea, only thing Im hesitant about is making sure the new hole is centered and straight. Oversizing the existing hole for a short 8mm thread insert will be easier I think using the existing as a guide

    Quite a difference between a thread chaser tap and a thread cutting tap.

    Then If I was doing this the tire would be off the wheel. The wheel on the drill press table.

    I would never attempt to drill the hole free hand . Let alone tap threads for a thread insert unless it was the only possible way. I have cobble together many fixtures to use The Mag drill for projects like this!

    I wasnt able to find a reasonably quality M8x1.0 chaser that wasnt part of a whole kit, so tap it was. Like I say I did them by hand, but at any rate whats done is done

    And no, I definitely dont have any fancy tools to make this repair. A hand drill and patience is what Ill use to get the job done when the helicoils finally arrive :D

    I would have done a thread chaser instead of a tap. Like you said, sometimes the tap will loosen up something that shouldn't have been recut.. The chaser would have cleaned the threads I think?

    I dont have a suggestion for keeping the bolts in. Would blue locktite not work? or thread tape?

    Those aren't helpful if his threads are messed up. The wheel is the threaded part, not the rock ring.

    The wheels are my issue, not the rings unfortunately

    Ended up going with some appliance tape as a temporary measure :D

    I think the brushed finish turned out pretty good all things considered. I know you and I had talked about that when you stopped by my neck of the woods a few weeks ago
