I changed my canister and I'm still throwing codes. I've been told there is a valve on top of the tank that can go bad as well. I just clear the codes every so often.

I haven't thrown a code yet. Strong gas smell especially in summer and just outside driver side door. Really strong between bed and cab (space). Any ideas??

the charcoal canister right in front of your front left tire. or it could be the fuel filter right exactly where you described. just inside the frame. but only if you have a 6 cyl.

You will have to replace the seals on top of the tank. After they get older it starts to seep and leaks vacuum.

Is it easier to drop the tank or take the bed off?

So I haven't thrown code yet. Been driving for a while with strong smell. No leaks visible. All started when I topped off tank in summer. Again no leaks visible however when I put my hand on gasket I smell gas on hand....

Take the bed off! You need to get at the top and it's all there when you remove the bed.
Dropping the tan without removing the bed is a bear.
    I've done both.

I've had this problem for a while now. I noticed it on driver's side, right behind the cab. Mostly noticed the smell for a few days after filling up, and only when I was driving. It wouldn't smell after sitting overnight. Just after I'd been driving. I could see wetness on the top of the tank, around where the sending unit goes in. It had thrown a code (P0442, small evap leak).

So when I had my bed off to coat the frame in December, I replaced the gasket under that unit. Of course, I went and fucked up putting the unit back on and destroyed one of the 8 screws/bolts beyond repair (but hell did I try everything I could think of to get the broken one out). So I resigned to 7 out of 8. Figured it'd be no issue. And sure enough, gas smell went away and after I cleared the CEL, the code did not return. Until last month.

The gas smell is back and the same code has returned. I also have another code. (P050, I think. Very small evap leak). I got a new Stant fuel cap, hoping that clears the new one, as it is still pending. So now I have to start looking at fuel lines and such. My worry is that only having 7 out of 8 screws on the sending unit is the issue, but then I wonder why it was fine for 3 months. Who knows. Eventually I will figure it out. I am just hoping that I won't have any issues with inspection. It's just emissions here in NJ, but I am due this month.

I know it’s an old thread, but does anyone have the part numbers to replace the seal/valve on the top of the tank?

I’m experiencing the same — mainly when the tank is full, and a day after a fill up the code goes.

Mechanic said it was an evap code, and I bought a cheap code reader and had already decided to go about clearing the code now and then. I managed to pass emissions just fine — clearing the code just after it is thrown then driving around for a few days and doing emissions on a low tank of gas seemed to work.

It threw the code today after some good bumps on I-95, so maybe it is a deal jarring loose somehow.
