I have a 2016 TRD Off-Road 4x4 with an automatic trans. Just over 6700 miles. I've been loving the truck so far. HOWEVER, I've noticed a very unsettling "bug" you might say. It doesn't happen consistently, but most commonly presents itself immediately after breaking. Once my breaking is complete, I'll gently depress the gas pedal and the truck will jerk forward in a mild to sometimes very strong spike in acceleration. Lasts half a second. Immediately following the spike, the truck resumes normal acceleration. One time the spike in acceleration was so strong the back tires spun out. I counted 3 occurrences before 5500 miles. (I remember because I took the truck in for "5000 mi" service at the dealer at that mark). Since then it has happened much more frequently. I would estimate at least once per week. Sometimes more often. I can't purposely replicate it, but it most often happens when accelerating out of a right turn. I approach the right turn, press the break pedal to slow to a safe turning speed, release the break half through the turn and immediately but gently apply gas to accelerate out, and BAM! The jerk in acceleration is a very similar feeling when you drop the clutch rapidly in a manual transmission and the vehicle jumps forward.

It's sucks because I really do love everything else about the truck. But this issue is really leaving a bad taste in my mouth. Anyone else experience something similar?

Yes ive experienced the same thing but had narrowed it down to occasionally it can be confused by your inputs and downshift too low..usually happens to me when i coast dow hill at various speeds.

I would think most manufacturers transmissions would encounter this issue to some degree.

Are you having a hard engagement into gear? Do the RPMs flare up before acceleration? If both of those are occurring, it's typically a sign of low transmission fluid.

Hope that update comes soon. Truck would be perfect for me if this was addressed.

Haven't noticed any of those symptoms. I'll keep an eye out. Thanks!

A little update. It now happens daily. I even noted one time where I was at a red light and fully stopped, then suddenly the truck wanted to lunge forward and I felt a strong spike in acceleration. It felt as if I hit the gas for a second while keeping my other foot on the brake. That made me a little nervous. I'm taking the truck to the dealership this week. We'll see what they say.

i don't know if it is trans programming....

This (maybe its the same issue?) happens in my truck and i have a manual transmission. In second gear at lower speeds, applying the gas sometimes causes the truck to buck. Also if I am allowing the truck to slow itself down in 2nd, it will start slowing stronger and stronger (rate increasing) until maybe 14 mph at which point there is a release, slight buck, and the slowing rate decreases (this is all without my foot on the gas or brake by the way). It is weird.

I've just learned to adjust my driving to avoid it. The truck requires some real fine finesse of the gas pedal to be smooth at speeds in 1st and 2nd gear (1st is understandable though).

Id love to have a power spike to break the tires loose. This truck is a dog off the line.

Not if you trade it in for a manual transmission ;)

    Another update...
-Called Toyota Corporate this past Tuesday 6/28 and had a case number created.
-Dropped off the truck at the dealership Wednesday 6/29.
-Yesterday 6/30, the service manager called and said they confirmed my description of what was happening and also found the transmission fluid was low from manufacturing. They said they were going to bring the fluid to the proper spec and test drive the truck again. Said that Toyota has been having issues across the board for 2016's and a service bulletin went out recently. Also said "Toyota is scrambling to find a solution for everything."
-Later that same day, they called back saying they found a leak in the trans near the output shaft. Repair required parts not in-stock. They were hoping to get parts today. Got a loaner for now.
    Now we wait...

Dang buddy, hope it gets sorted out. You should definitely make a case for an extended warranty.

I took mine in for automatic hesitation and some similar signs. It was 1 qt low on fluid and the dealer indeed was aware (internal Toyota network tsb I assume). That was the 1st of several problems I wanted addressed at 5250 miles. The 2nd, and by far the most annoying noise I ever witnessed, was a terrible squeak in the front passenger suspension area http://s38.photobucket.com/user/mrproduxn/media/062716 tacoma squeak_zpspspxtis2.mp4.html
Well dealer called and said the only thing they found was possible dry sway bar bushings so they took it apart and lubricated it. I did tell them initially that the noise appears generally after 10 minutes of driving so please drive it. I also showed them the video. Picked it up last night. Drove another car to work today. Got home and drove the Taco to get supper. tonight Squeaking like a MF again. The 3rd problem is a grease smear that appears inside driver door glass every time I use it since it had 10 miles. Sorry they could not find a problem. The 4th problem is my trip meters reset at random. Sorry they never heard of that and have no fix but were glad to report it to Toyota for me. So now what. Do I trade it up for a YUGO. I probably need to open a case with corporate. I almost forgot that when I had new tires and wheels installed the guy who has done over 40 tires and tpms for me said that 3 tpms were broke off from stems and rolling around in the tires. When I told the Toyota dealer they said there is no way they would register if they were separated. Before I file a claim against my friend I am going to place a separated sensor in a old tire and reset my tpms on the truck. If it reads the one loose in a tire then Toyota will owe me new sensors with mounting and re-balancing my tires.
So if you think you have problems then you are lucky just to have one.

Great idea if the sensors work. Who should pay for the broken 3. Can only works if the sensors work.

Just proved the Toyota dealer wrong on the tpms. I installed 1 with stem and placed 3 without stems inside an old tire. TPMS light immediately went out. This is the opposite of what the Toyota "expert" told me at the dealer. Next week will sit down with the actual service manager to discuss this and the other issues not fixed at 5k service.
