Yea I think I will have similar if I go to part design...but its ok I don't have that crazy of bills.

Agreed...the money will come in time no matter what we get into for the long run anyway.

I've designed prototype parts that have been sent and tested on the ISS, designed military ECU's, robot EOATs, so somewhat!

I think design engineering (and programming robots) is extremely fun.

that's awesome, I have been doing HVAC design....so not all design is fun lol. only so much excitement with ductwork, air handlers, boilers, etc...

Important stuff though! I've done some small HVAC projects, just some ducting from our ECU to the pop up building or something.

Do you use Solidworks? That's a great tool for product design. I've also been using Inventor a lot lately, pretty okay too.

oh no, when I say I do design, I mean designing the system and doing the engineering behind it, not physically doing the CAD.

Solidworks is fun to use. I wanted to get into design unfortunately my current career path has led into more plc programming/electrical system design (aka nothing 3d/2d). Thinking its about time for a change though

Oh that's awesome! and very interesting! So you the airflow simulation studies?!

Nothing wrong with that! I've done some PLC programming and it's fun as well. I just got done programming a UR-5 Cobot, which is more like java or C++ style coding.

Have you seen the sweet Opto22 Stuff?

yes sometimes I've done that. mainly building load calculations, system selection, and doing the on paper design for the CAD group to draw.

all government contract stuff, pretty limited in being able to do your own "design" and more just following the book/specs/requirements. gets pretty boring sometimes, definitely ready for this change.

well i'm stoked for you dude! it's extremely rewarding to take your ideas in your brain, stick them on some medium (CAD, paper, etc), and see them come to frution

haha I think it's fun seeing your control strategy in real time. That's awesome! and the Opto22 Groove epic above I linked, but it's a very neat solution for Industry 4.0 strategies

Shit I had to do both since most of the engineers in my office developed, drew, and executed all the deliverables for our associated projects. Depending on the engineer...it takes more time to discern redlines then just do them yourself which also helps the designer to be more aware of what is credible to reflect on drawings.

a lot of times I wish I had done it all myself, the CAD folk here are about as smart as rocks sometimes.

Whats crazy is most jobs out west require an engineering degree with cad, solidworks, revit, etc on top of design experience and calcs.

I think the days of engineers that only make redlines are fading...I wouldn't be surprised if in another 5 years that its a requirement to cad your own stuff if you are solely a designer. I know at my old company you either were a PM that didn't have time to actually draw stuff or you made your own drawings.

My boss did the same thing and he never slept. Kind of why I am hoping to leave the MEP realm as man its just not worth it for the work they do IMO. Having a shitty project never helps though.
