Do you you have a place to store a small enclosed trailer you can probably buy a used 5 by 8 trailer for the price of one year storage unit rent if you have somewhere to keep it and you have a trailer to use

I was thinking of that. It's hard for me to weigh these options.

Pros and cons I can think of:

    Storage unit:
    Pros:
Bike is out of the elements
Out of sight, out of mind of theives scoping out
Locked inside and down a hallway (possibly) instead of at an outside unit
Cameras, gates, multiple locks to deal with to get to the bike

    Cons:
    Common targets for theives
Can't check on it every day
Owners could be involved and I wouldn't know it (i.e. telling theives "there's a bike/valuables in unit XXX")

    Cable lock/ground anchor:
    Pros:
A pain in the ass for theives, likely would need a grinder to get it
Major deterrent, maybe they'll pass over it for another easier score
I can use the chain in other places
    Cheaper than a unit

    Cons:
    Outside in the elements
Covered but still seen by passersby and theives scoping out areas
Could get knocked over or vandalized
Can still be defeated by a die-hard
The extra security screams "I'm valuable to my owner"

How hard would it be to steal a trailer, especially in an open apartment lot?

Well I just checked scamslist and couldn't find anything for less than $1700. Also, someone could just jack the trailer... even easier..

I mean, I don't live in a terrible area. Like I said, it's a "good" area and the storage unit is two minutes away... and I'm surrounded by nice cars. Someone down the street has a freaking McLaren. But I know bikes are so bad about being stolen.

You can add a gps locator for cheap if you wanted to. Id do it just as backup anyways.

They also make alarms, A friend once called it something, but its like alarming your truck with the windows down.

The GPS is great, but that's after it's stolen. I just don't want it to get stolen!

Might be cheaper to buy a shed at zero payments or interest for 18months from Home Depot Credit Card - Pay it off in 18months and you own that instead of giving someone else the $$

Lol. Really I would just get a storage unit then, or move to an apt with available garages. Whichever gives you peace of mind. The storage unit could be shady but youll have to risk that. How often do you ride the bike? It would be a pain if you rode it a lot.

Edit just saw you wont be riding it for a while.

Sheds are probably not allowed in apartment complexes.

    Too few to list.
When I had a bike and didn't have a garage, I stored it in someone else's garage. My uncle's bike was stolen out of his apartment complex 2 nights after he got it. It was even parked between a wall and his truck. Even with caliper locks, two guys can easily carry the bike into a truck bed.

    Another con for storage units:
I had one years ago, went there one day to find their lock over mine! I go to the office and ask WTF I'm paid in full every month? They told me, oh didn't we tell you we rose your rent? You have to pay all outstanding rent to get our lock off. (My stuff was being held hostage basically) My lease had went to a month to month when the units were sold to another party. Never again!
Get a trailer and chain that bi*ch to a tree!

we lived in a pretty damn nice area. no where near any sort of sketch areas, although it had some college kids that lived there and im sure between some of the parties some pretty sketchy people come around. my buddy had a caliper lock and they apparently had enough people to pick it up and take it away. I agree, thieves will always find a way to take something if they want it. if you can get that bike on the inside storage unit, id say you should be golden.

Storage unit sounds like a good idea, especially if you can offset the cost, then why not? Worth the peace of mind IMO.

I have the same worry with my truck outside my apartment. Not the nicest of areas (definitely not a "bad" area though), and the most common truck theft is older Toyota's :( I have a KARR alarm installed though so it can't be driven without my key. Wish I had a garage!

I couldn't do that since I wouldn't have a place to put it.

Yeah I will ride the Ninja 300 until it sells. Then I'll have to deal with maneuvering the GSXR out every time I wanted to ride it. But it's a small inconvenience at least until I can get my own garage.

Probably not permitted in an apartment building with other inhabitants. Fire/combustible codes.

Well I ended up getting a storage unit. It's a complete pain in the ass to maneuver the bike down the narrow ass hallways. I end up having to do multiple point turns. But since I'm not going to ride it until the ninja sells, I feel good about it.

Nice area sometimes is worse..people in bad areas know where good shit is and where people may not be as vigilant. I grew up in a rich town and even there I hear of break ins a lot, mostly cars since someone didn't lock the doors.

OP, good solution as I see it. Good luck
