I recently bought a set of billy 5100's and OME 885 coils. The guy I bought them from said he had to replace to top plates. After looking around it seems the top of my struts don't stick out as far from the plate as most I've seen... Is this normal?? Shouldn't it stick out more than that? I couldn't even get a top Spacer on could I? The shocks are set at '0 too.

Not much higher than the mounting bolts.. Others I've seen, seem to maybe have a different top plate.. Not sure if it matters..?

Are you sure they are assembled correctly? Could just be the design of the plates if their aftermarket.

All the bushings and washers look correct. It must be that the top plate is just different.. The photo's I've seen just seem to have the top of the strut sticking out much further. I hope it doesn't affect the shock at all.. Topping out I mean.

I guess I'm just wondering if anyone knows if I'll still get the 2.5 of lift I'm supposed to get? With the top hat being higher I'm wondering if I've lost the lift in the springs..

Are you replacing the top plates on yours? Typically they don't need to come out when just installing the coil over and spring.

For example, when I replaced my coil overs with 5100's, I just left those plates installed and pulled out the coil over and spring.

Those springs are going to compress when you install them and the top strut rod will stick out further, if that makes sense.

Like he said. They will probably move when you put them on the truck. Tighten them after instalation.

Those are not the correct top plates. They don't even look close to correct. I'd recommend ordering some correct top plates and new bushings and redoing it all.

Did you take your top plates out? What happened to yours?

The guy I bought them off had changed them cause he said one was cracked. Not sure if he did it himself or not. I think I'm going to order new ones before I try and install tho. They definitely don't look right, that's why I was worried.

I'm talking about your truck. It should have plates already installed on it. Those 2 bolts you see in the pic are the bolts from that plate. You can't see the 3rd bolt in the pic. That plate doesn't need to come out to replace the coil over. I'm just wondering why you need new ones.

It's more the top of the strut I'm concerned about. It doesn't seem to look like it will stick up much past the housing on the truck. Comparing mine to yours, the top of your strut with the bolt sits much higher than the 3 on the plate. Not do mine seem to have that extra cap sorta thing on top. They're flat. The guy must have put the wrong ones in, no?

Probably first gen top hats. So yes, they're clearly incorrect for your truck, but, as moondeath has pointed out, you should already have the correct ones on your truck. No need to buy new ones, just swap the top hats when installing the new struts and coils.

Edit: can you post pictures of the entire strut assembly to confirm they are 2nd gen 5100s. Shouldn't be using 885s on a first gen, but wouldn't hurt to check.

They're deffinielty 2nd gens, I checked the serial number. Coils are 885's too. So I'm good there! Will the stock Bilstein tops fit the same on the 5100's? I have a spacer in the shocks now.
