The wife is totally against me getting a 2nd gen Taco due to the stuck accelerator defect. Did anything ever come of that? Toyota never reproduced it and there's always been speculation around folks unknowingly pressing the gas or the mat getting in the way.

Any other evidence to help me build my case so we can bring a 2nd gen home? Or is there really a risk? Thoughts?

I don't know if the root cause ever was determined, but the fix was to shave the pedal and put down pins on the floor mat, so that leads me to believe it was purely a mechanical failure of pedal physically getting stuck. Worst case, shift to neutral. I can't believe how many idiots got into an accident because of a stuck gas pedal LOL

Haven't had this problem and hope never do. Toyota did redesign floor mats to prevent them from interfering with pedals. Now you get wear on your carpet by pedal because it has no protection so an after market fitted mat is a good way to go to solve the carpet wearing problem.

I just throw floor liners in all my trucks. Keeps the mud and dirt off everything and the carpet fresh for resale in 10-20 years. Ha

Stacked floor mats that causes stuck accelerator pedals. No stack = no issue. Have no idea why one would stack multiple layers of floor mats in the first place!! I got into a buddy’s car the other day.... had 4 stacked on top of each other!!! :anonymous:

It was stuck floor mats. Customers were stacking 4 floor mats and the pedal was catching.

1: They educated customers not to stack mats.
2: They shaved the pedals to be shorter not to catch even if there is mats.
3: They updated the software so if the pedal is caught, the brake pedal being pressed at the same time will cut power
4: There was never any proven cases or lawsuits where Toyota was deemed at fault or liable.

I've actually had a Tacoma 6 speed catch the clutch on an Amazon special tray mat. Was pretty scary haha.

I've had a camry v6 catch the accelerator and a LS430 catch. Both had mountains of mats and newspaper on the floor.

I think those are the same type of people who opt to have a second roof installed over the existing roof because it’s easier then stripping off the original roof. Although there’s much more cost expense to doing a roof, the same logic applies as just being lazy and throwing something on top of another thing to avoid work.

A car I had had multiple mats. One day I decided to vacuum really good, found multiple layers of mats with worms between them. So I cleaned them, drove for a bit without them, found a divot worn into the carpet where your heel would sit for the accelerator. My heel would get stuck so I couldn’t accelerate and worse get stuck so I couldn’t lift.

Thats why on every Toyota work-order right at the top under Job #1 it states - "checked/secured installation of driver's floor mat"

If Toyota got all of their lawyers together in one room it would fill a football stadium

OP tell your wife that drive by wire cars are way safer than the old mechanical linkage designs of old.

This new stuff is state of the art. The communication between the gas pedal and the electronic throttle is on 2 seperate circuits and they constantly check each other. Any signal above or below the expected range sets a code and multiple warning lights. Nothing is missed.

Anybody ever have the linkage stick on an old carburator? I have, and there was no fail-safe or backup strategy to bail me out either. Had to shove it in neutral, coast to the side of the road and dick around under the hood burning my hands and swearing while the engine tried to throw a rod at me.

Ive had throttle cables stick on Chevy products, an old Silverado and a Astrovan. Those were fun

How you're going to stack a mountain of floor mats and not expect ANY vehicle make or model's gas pedal to not get caught on the carpet is beyond me. I still see it happening all the time on other cars.

Some people should not be driving on the road man.

Years ago my wife used to throw all kinds of stuff on the driver's side floor mat when she got into the car. I asked her what would happen if it would roll or get stuck under the brake pedal? She didn't have an answer, but it wasn't surprising when you're a man and right. Anyways, the passenger side gets cluttered now. At least I don't have to clean the mess before I drive her car.
