Anyone know how he could get out of that without help? If it was close enough to a road could he have called a tow truck? I know there are companies around here that will go off road (to an extent; muddy field, beach, etc) to help somebody. I've seen several tow trucks that have 4x4 capabilities.

I think he said he called some wrecker co's and they said their 4x4's were broke down.

I hope we hear back from him soon...because I think this thing got him:

Well cross lanes is a pretty closed in area from what i know. Im out there all the time but i dont think the tow companies around here do much offroad recovery. Hes not too far out of town though so im sure hes found a way by now.

It may be the fact that I drive a prerunner but I try to never off road alone and if at all possible have a buddy with 4x4 nearby. Sucky situation though. I have been stuck without help before. Help got stuck trying to get me.

I don't know the situation for certain but I think, with tools, he could get himself out. I would hope his starting point was aired down.

If it were me, I would start by building trail. The idea is to get the wheels back to a place you can drive the vehicle. Pile rocks, dig. Whatever including lifting the truck and possibly getting material under the wheels--branches, rocks, etc. Even if you were going to winch yourself up the hill, you will need to have tools, recovery gear and something to act as an anchor point. Something else the OP said was that he'd made it to some point, not the top, twice. If I were him, I'd go back the way I came--not sure why that's not an option.

The off-road recovery people often charge an arm and a leg. If they'll come. I'm not sure if a regular tow operator will want to come up anything more than a dirt road--if they'll even do that.

He came down the hill and now can't get back up. His best bet would be to just gun it and stay out of the ruts it seems like.

    Ah. I missed that part.

The problem with gunning it is if he ends up in the rut again, there's a good possibility he will do some damage and really be f'd. I would say "slow and steady wins the race" where "slow" is a pace you can maintain and that gets you up the hill.

I guess the ticket is to walk the trail and plot his course. Then go for it--once he gets un-stuck.
